Hello,


This has been my first insurance year hence asking the question

What happens at the end of the insurance year ? does it just automatically renew and take the money from your account or does it cancel its self ?

I ask this as it's up coming in a few months and i am not continuing my insurance as i can ride/drive something bigger ...

It is very much like being in a mugging except a mugger generally gives you the choice of your cash and his knife. Oh and most muggers do not rape you.

You'll receive a renewal notice at least 21 days before renewal date.

Whether the policy auto renews is detailed in the terms of business agreement you would have been sent with your policy. But even if it does or doesn't - you're best to call and make clear your intention to accept renewal terms or lapse policy and ask for no claims bonus

TBF, every renewal notice I've had recently (for both the bike and the car) have been beaten by re-doing a quote independantly. Even with the same company!

Swintons sent my renewal for my Van Van, and I went to MCN compare and got a cheaper quote with Swintons! Rang them up and they honoured the new quote, and saved meself about £80.

Insurance is just a scam in my opinion. My mother-in-law just renews her home insurance without question, and this year I told her to go to a well known comparison site and she saved about £180! I've got a mate who works in insurance and it is surprisingly common for people to just accept the renewal price without question... Confused

Thought i may add...

Just dont wait too long between ending your current insurance and starting a new one.(im guessing you would want to use your 1 year no claims bonus)

I got 2 years ncb on a honda cg, i tried adding that to my existing policy for my er5 and they are being a bit of a pain in the ass about it. They want to know why there is a 'gap in cover' between the 2 policys, it just slows things down so thought id let you know..

Try 12 in the case of eBike. By letter and email. Are they supposed to do it sooner?

On the other hand, they don't auto-renew and allow explicitly instructing them to lapse online. That's a big step up from having to sit in a phone queue for the privilege of begging some commission monkey to pretty please not bill you again.

Of course, they still try and rape you on the renewal. It's literally not worth wasting my time contacting them about it, I'll just lapse it and do a new quote with a £40 off voucher.

Mmm, I thought so too. The renewal letter is dated 02/03/2013 for renewal on the 19th, but it arrived on the 7th, the same day that they sent an email.

They're losing the plot a bit, the email says (their bold) "You can only renew your policy on-line." but the letter has an 0845 number for their "dedicated Renewals Team". I guess they're got different management teams fighting over whether it's better business to sack off all phone contacts, or to try and retain custom.

All that said, being able to actually lapse online really is a big bonus, so they'll very likely get my business again just on the basis that they didn't try and pull a fast one.

And then I got a text giving an 0800 number to call, or text RENEW and they will call me back.

And then they called me anyway...
