This angers me, these airline staff are first in line for a terrorist attack yet they treat servicemen and women like second-class citizens. No amount of apologising will make up for failing to set out a firm policy on the matter. It's bloody outrageous. Whatever youre politics are on the issue, you have to have some pride in people who are willing to put their lives on the line for others because THEY believe it's right.

I understand where you are comming from, but it may now be seen as anyone wearing a uniform may become a target and so may the aircraft that they are in.

Mind you if she was fit and was made to do the trip mnaked then be told to remove the uniform is fine by me.

I can never unmderstand though why so many people who are in the army etc like to walk around in for want of a better phrase, their work clothes. I cant wait when I get home to take my boots, pants, shirt and tie off.

It would be a semi-valid point, if it was the reason given. As it was, they told her that it 'might offend' someone. I would have answered that if someone did feel offended they need to keep their mouth shut about it so that their opinion didn't offend me, then we would get along fine.

To be fair, she was only wearing the uniform so she could be Betty Big-Time when she arrived in the US. They love their military over there.

When doing my basic training at RAF Swinderby in '81 I came home on my first leave and we had to wear No.1 uniform.

On returning sunday evening I was at King's Cross looking at the time-board and got a load of aggro from about five or six low-life scrotes because I stood-out. Then, from doorways all around me, appeared other RAF personnel in uniform and the scrotes legged-it! That felt really good. Smile Thumbs Up

Fairness to Virgin it was a petty security bod (jumped-up PCSO) that kicked all this off for her and the VA staff followed blindly.

What were they doing paying any attention to an airport rent-a-cop inventing rules about what they can and can't do on their aeroplane?

It's just spineless jobsworth cowards all the way down. Crying or Very sad

If a PCSO told you to stick your head in the oven, you wouldn't do it though would you? Whoever it was should have been told to 'get and do one'.

No mention of the ethnicity of the security officer, that might have had a bearing on Virgin's actions I guess but it's still no excuse.

There was no requirement for her to wear uniform, so what reason could she possibly have other than "bigging herself up"?

I see what I did there.

Armed forces personnel are encouraged to have pride in their uniform and to wear it in public.

And when I was in we were forbidden to wear our clobber on leave because of the IRA. Rolling Eyes

Although I've been out a few years, the military had their own rules about not wearing uniform when flying "civ air".

Looks like a case of bigging herself up from this angle.

Yeah. The 4 year old DM article also sez:

Quote:
Other new measures outlined include:
A new 'Veteran's Card' to be issued to everyone leaving the armed forces, to be used as a form of ID and to help them claim discounts or benefits offered at sports events or by commercial companies.

And that's a load of old bollocks too.

Not only that, they mentioned the military but they put up a photo of some RAF chubsters waddling around in a dangerous manner.

If airport 'security' told the majority of the population that something was illegal then I'm pretty sure most people would comply. It doesn't seem that unreasonable that they should know the rules and a flight attendant / boarding staff probably don't.

Big fuss, I don't know why virgin are involved but I think the security personnel need to be re-taught.

I'm a bit torn on this.

On the one hand you probably have a typical comedy ethnic giving it the full "Blakey" and making rules up just so that they can later say down at the mosque that they "made a soldier suffer".

On the other hand, you have someone wearing that uniform expecting the full doffing of hats and "We're so proud of you" clap-trap.

I personally don't think military uniforms should be worn on civilian flights.

Perhaps there should be a compromise whereby they can wear the uniform, but preferably with awards for number of kills, headshots, kill streaks etc Wink

Subject doesn't really reflect background of storey as reported; Virgin airlines staff advised by airport security that servicewoman must remove uniform.

So, pride in terrorists then?
That's what they do, yes? - Put their lives on the line*.

* To make it clear that I'm using the US gubbermint definition - probably a lot more so than our troops have to, too.

Would it be ok for a 'jihadi' to wear something that distinguishes them as such? (Guessing their uniform isn't so, well uniform.)

Whether I was allowed to or not, I wouldn't wear my uniform in public like that. You either get people talking crap or people talking sappy "god bless you" crap. No thanks!

The subject line does reflect the story G, the story is that Virgin wouldn't let the woman board the plane in fatigues.
