So i've just taken out motorcycle insurance, with the policy starting next week.

I set the estimated annual mileage figure to '2000 miles' at the time of the quote.

The policy states that they wish for me to send them a photocopy of my license, but nowhere does it ask for me to inform them of the bikes current mileage. Infact amongst all the documents outlining the finer details, it has an empty space for the 'odometer reading', whilst the same document does still detail the 2000 miles limit in force.

Is anyone else's policy the same? What is to stop me riding from Lands End to John O'Groats every day and have them none the wiser?

Disclaimer - this is purely speculative, I do not intend to exceed the estimated mileage.

Absolutely nothing. My estimated annual mileage last year was 1000 and I did 5000 in 1 month when I went touring around Europe. What's funny is I had breakdown cover from my insurance company, they picked me up from France when my tyre blew and didn't even ask about the mileage.

I found there was little benefit with a low mileage, as insurance companies don't really load it. If anything they should penalise low mileage motorcyclists as it's the fair weather riders that tend to "go out for a blast" and smash their bike up, not the guy who does 10k miles a year through all four seasons. Saying you'll do 1000 miles basically is stating that your bike is your Sunday stress release missile, and if the company had any sense they'd double the premium!

The bike had it's MOT a few months before my policy begins so the previous owner could've done 10000 miles Inbetween that time.

Wouldn't worry about it. I put 5k down for this policy. I'm on about 8k now with just shy of a month remaining.

It's an estimate. I based my estimate upon the miles required to commute to & from my place of work/study, + 1000 leisure miles. Would never have expected some of the things to happen this year that have happened, so I certainly couldn't estimate to account for them!

I'm going to renew at 4k miles because it's cheaper and I'm aiming to do a lot less miles. We'll see how that one goes!

Also you do 100's of trackdays and the mileage on the track doe not count towards the total mileage shown on the clocks.

Also your speedo display broke and you fitted a new one with higher mileage.

Also you have a very long drive and that mileage does not count either. In fact 50% of your commute is down your drive so they can half whatever figure they say you have covered on the policy.

Also you were balancing your front tyre after fitting while your bike was on an abba stand which resulted in you spinning the wheel many times recording mileage that was not performed on the road.

My bike doesn't need an MOT for another two years.

I've said I'll do 7,500. I've done over 1,000 in less than a month since I got it!
