DOT3? Will DOT 4 do?

On my bike (GPZ600R 1990 model) it says on the brake reserviour that ONLY DOT 3 fluid should be used, however, I was wondering what would happen if I used DOT 4?

Surely DOT4 is better.

DOT 4 replaced 3 as far as I know, so should be better but at very least the same.

DOT4 is for higher temps and is more expensive.

If the manufacturer recommend DOT3, I would use DOT3. I don't think it would cause any damage using DOT4 but it is a waste of money. It is designed for higher performance brakes. DOT4 also absorbs less moisture so DOT3 is better on the wallet and longevity.

Do not use DOT5 though, that is totally different stuff.

DOT4 handles higher heat. If your bike is calling for DOT3, that means that the manufacturer does not feel that the braking system will not raise the brake fluid above a temperature that DOT3 can handle.

DOT4 will be fine IMO.

DOT 4 will be fine.
DOT 4 is probably more readily available, the likes of Asda and Tesco sell it after all.

Just don't open up the debate between DOT5 and DOT5.1

There are some types of brake fluid which are incompatible with some systems, as they attack the rubber seals and can cause expensive damage - I'm thinking of some tractors but also Citroen cars you really had to watch what you put in even a little top up of the wrong stuff would prove expensive.
