When will these become mainstream? I am pretty fascinated with this subject, as it'll change the world drastically. Using the superposition of electrons to make a computer! Really awesome stuff! We'd have enough computing power to do things that was once thought impossible, like simulate entire protein reactions!

So when do you think they will become mainstream? Decoherence is still a problem, but they're getting around it slowly. I say 10 - 20 years sometime.

Intel will be on 5nm silicon processors in 2019, so it's unlikely they'll have a quantum computer on sale next to it. Beyond that is uncertain, possibly continue making the processors, but out of carbon instead?

They won't change the world drastically. They'll do the same essential job only quicker. They'll also mean we have to start again with cryptography.

They're decades away. I remember back in '95 hearing that someone had used a cup of coffee to do basic addition. Since then we've got barely any further.

Quantum computers will be faster and better but certainly won't change the world like their forefathers did.

and not to mention the fact that every single piece of software will need rewriting, and not in the usual way, as quantum computers don't have a sensible set of instructions/etc, more for hooking things together to perform one specific operation ridiculously well

now quantum co-processors are a possibility relatively soon, but there's no way anyone will make them affordable compared to just slapping more conventional cores together

Rewriting the software will be no problem, it'll keep me in a job until I retire (if it's ready before then anyway).

Co-processor or processor doesn't really matter. I see powerful multi qubit processors being used first for specialised purposes and then we'll get the co-processors as they trickle down to the home market. Once we can make cheap reliable qubits it'll be easy.

The problem they face is they solve problems we don't need solving all that often. Classical computers will still be better at certain operations.

I believe you mean "quantum computers are approaching fast, oops they've disappeared".

unfortunately by trying to observe when quantum computers will be available, we are changing when they'll become available

...quantum physics is fun

IBM seem to have made some progress. Agreed the effect on cryptography could be catastrophic considering how dependent e-commerce, banking, network security etc is on current methods of crypto. Private key stuff like AES doesn't look to be affected as much though.

Indeed, but I don't think it would ever be an either or proposition. It would start with coprocessors then perhaps the balance would shift in accordance with application compatibility.

Indeed, but in all possible universes they already exist...

But will a quantum computer be able to play Crysis on the ultra graphics setting?
