Hello all Smile never thought i would be posting in this section! but with dropping my helmet and then replacing it. I thought I would have a go at respraying it.. so here are the pictures.
https://s1341.beta.photobucket.com/user/DottyDuck/media/helmet%20respray/20130310_194044_zps0c26e62d.jpg.html
https://s1341.beta.photobucket.com/user/DottyDuck/media/helmet%20respray/20130310_200435_zpsea6eabcc.jpg.html
the first 2 photos are of my helmet sanded down and taped.. the second photo i taped inside because i was going to put a stick underneath it but ended up using a table!

https://s1341.beta.photobucket.com/user/DottyDuck/media/helmet%20respray/20130311_170416_zps79525586.jpg.html
this is the first coat!.. this is the time where i thought "shit! what if it doesn't cover well!?
https://s1341.beta.photobucket.com/user/DottyDuck/media/helmet%20respray/20130311_181854_zpsacd4989c.jpg.html
this is 4 coats later of primer!
https://s1341.beta.photobucket.com/user/DottyDuck/media/helmet%20respray/20130313_005530_zps1968fff8.jpg.html
https://s1341.beta.photobucket.com/user/DottyDuck/media/helmet%20respray/20130313_005545_zpsed6d6332.jpg.html
this is after 2 coats of "flat black" i seen that i sprayed abit too much on the left hand side (if the helmet is on a head it would be the right side) and it was annoying me! so stupidly enough i got some kitchen role and wiped the area.. next thing the area has little bits of tissue.. i run inside to get wet wipes... as you can guess this hasn't helped
https://s1341.beta.photobucket.com/user/DottyDuck/media/helmet%20respray/20130313_011054_zpsc330e756.jpg.html
so as you can see i have taped around the area i messed up (grhhh Brick Wall ) and will be sanding it again... then prime it with 4 coats then leave it a day then do the 2 coats of black tape of the tape... do 1 full coat of black.. then i will be adding a bit more colour to it... so will post more pics (well links to pics because i still cant master uploading pics properly! Rolling Eyes )

It's a dropped helmet, it's not gonna be used again.

Cut the chin strap to make it a certainty.

A replacement has been bought. I believe this is for ornament/having a go at spraying purposes.

Looks good so far anyway Dotty Thumbs Up

Plans for cool patterns??

i have done it to give me the confidence of doing more when it comes to my bike Smile i have also enjoyed doing it! have put the primer on today so putting the base colour on then i can get too to the creative part!! Smile

for the design... obviously flat black is the base.. wanted to pick a neutral- dark colour.. as i felt it would be more forgiving! while looking at colours a "chrome effect" one was available so i chose that.. more through being intrigued to see how it would turn out.. i also picked red Smile because i like it and think it will go well with the black and chrome..

if you look at the helmet from the side/front you will see a raised bit.. that is around the visor... so i am going to do that in chrome then will do a red outline... you will see the air vent in front of the chin area.. that will be getting painted red... and the slot bit that goes ontop will be painted black... on the top of the helmet there is also another raised stripe area... which i am wanting to do like a checkered flag effect... so will have the colour chrome and black... and i am really tempted to put the number "12" because 2012 was the year i got into biking..again doing the 12 in chrome with red outline... to fit in with the rest of it...

hope the description makes abit of sense!

thanks for the tutorial Smile

Ah..............

Black is the worst colour to pick, if you don't do your prep properly; it shows every mark, scratch, ripple and spraying deficiency.

the red will be used after to outline the silver on the front around to the side... as well as the bit along the back.. and also on the side of the check bit...

Full Marks for effort Dotty Karma Thumbs Up
Little bit of bleeding there on your masking... this is becouse you used masking tape, not edgeing tape.
Masking tape is not great for 'masking' on jobs like this as you have just discovered.
Edging tape, or 'fine Edge' is what the pro's use, and its more like insulation tape, in texture and you can bend it in curves and stuff... damn fiddly to use well!
But... what you have may clean up with some deft nibbing back with T-cut.

Re the will the paint attack the plastic question; always mentioned when these posts get put up; but bit of old 'lore', and for the most part, provided the helmet has a GRP or Glass-Fibre shell, then it can be painted with reasonable confidence.
