"Hi, i have tried and tried to get this board to run with more than 1 stick of ram in it.
I have re-installed Windows 7 twice, updated all drivers, tried several different sets of ram of speeds from 1333 up to 1866, i've tried it with the board back out of the case and minimal connections, different ssd, and hdd, i just don't know what to try next.
Any suggestions please......
Regards, Helen. "

This motherboard is an MSI Z77A GD55 LGA 1155, bios was updated to latest version before sale, I was using it before sale, so I know it works, however I don't know about her ram problem as I only used one stick of ram..

The motherboard didn't boot for me (continuous reboot cycle) until I put the stick of ram in the furthest channel away from the CPU (which google told me to do (don't have manual)..

I got it new from a shop. I don't know anything about her setup, so maybe it's something her end & not the motherboard, it's got 3 years warranty anyways, so feck knows why she's pestering me.

Anyhow, money is tight & I really cba with any shit storm from chargebacks, the money is cashed out from my paypal anyways, as I sold it about 2-3 week ago.

I can't remember if I got a receipt for posting, I've posted a few computer parts and the first 2 items, I never got a receipt for, whether or not this mobo is one of those 2, I haven't a clue.

What can she do?

She can say it doesn't work and send back/claim refund from paypal.

This is why I do not sell computer items on ebay.

Dont worry about that, she has already admitted she has the mobo.

You could reply with

I was only using 1 stick of ram and it worked witout problems.
Please try cleaning the ram slots with some compressed air to remove any dust.
Please try another stick of ram that is known to be working.
Other than that please contact MSI for a replacement as they have the 3yr guarantee.

Might be abit of hassle, but couldn't I close my paypal account or remove my bank details? I don't spend too much time in paypal to know the system, I know eBay won't let me remove my details for their auto fee payment.

Tung - Haha good point, but you know what eBayers are like.

And good points Cansa - I have replied in general at first saying it was working for me etc & just about to reply again saying a from a google (which seems to be alot of people) have the same problem with ram configuration & the board rebooting every 5 seconds with these boards.

It did my head in I tried 3 slots and called it a night, was about to return the thing then a quick google said try the furthest slot & it worked.

I don't know how much ram she is installing, what CPU she has etc so I bet it's BIOS settings that need adjusting. I want to know why it's taken 2-3 week to contact me about it. I posted it 1st class.

Either she's not using two sticks of the same RAM
The other RAM slots are faulty
BIOS settings somehow disabled the other RAM slots (if that's even possible)

It's obviously working normally with one stick as she's managed to install windows 7 so it's 'part faulty' so you could by liable to a partial refund if you sold it as fully working, which it isn't!

I suppose you wouldn't have known if you only had one stick of RAM though...

I had the continuous reboot thing when I bent the CPU pins, so i'm guessing there is something similar happening with the RAM slots

Any beeps?

The furthest slot from the CPU is a debug thing afaik

She must be doing something wrong so she could ask on the MSI forum.

Is she putting the sticks in the right channels?

My board has very strict rules about what sticks go where depending on how many sticks you are using.

Alpha - That's all she put in the message, hasn't replied to me yet.

I can't remember if there were any beeps when I was trying different slots.

A google before said someone had a bit of dust on the CPU pins & after sorting that, using all 4 slots worked.

If the pins are bent, that's her fault. Not mine, as I was using the damn computer, but I guess eBay/Paypal won't care for that.

Chris - Probably not, it's a woman.. Probably using 1 & 2, 2 & 3 or 3 & 4 instead of corresponding dual slots.

But from the MSI forums, seems alot of people have memory config problems. I just stuck with my old Maximus IV Gene-z, my ram will work wherever the fuck I put it. Thumbs Up

Edit -

"Just had a google, seems other people have problems with memory configuration regarding the MSI boards.

I would try slot 2 & 4 or 1 & 3 (try the 2 black slots) how much memory are you installing? I used 2x4GB in the black slots. Some motherboards are strict about what sticks go where depending on how many sticks you are using.

Here's a link to the manual - https://uk.msi.com/product/mb/Z77A-GD55.html#/?div=Manual

If you need a receipt for a replacement, I can forward one onto you.

Also see the forums for any help - https://forum-en.msi.com/

Other than that, please contact MSI for a replacement as they have the 3 year guarantee."

Pending sending that. Sound good?

Sounds good to me, and you've mentioned that it worked in both slots when you used it so she shouldn't have a problem, a good wash-your-hands response Thumbs Up

Bare in mind if you google that motherboard and RAM only working in one slot you get this thread, so she's probably read this if she has sense enough to use google

I googled that but nothing shown unless I put bcf at the end lol

Doubt she will, sent the message anyhow.

I've never RMA'd anything, so I don't know the process, but there should be a receipt hanging around somewhere if they need one to RMA the board.

Going to stay clear of MSI boards anyways for future upgrades, I hate the BIOS.

Asus BIOS Thumbs Up

Yes i have tried manual set-up on all the different modules i have tried.....and according to the MSI list they are all supported, if you can't shed any light on this i will have to assume the board is faulty.......it's certainly no good to me with only one ram slot useable at a time. So, where do we go from here?

Sigh... I'll just close my paypal, she can fuck off. It worked. It's under warranty.

Although I'm not tech support. How can I shed any fucking light when I dont know her set up..

Also 3 weeks to complain...

Edit - She's replied to my other message.

"Initially i installed 4x4Gb Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz 1.5v, board just went into boot loop. I then tried 1 Dimm only and managed to boot into bios and set the board up.
Since then i have tried soo many combinations and options i've kinda fogged over.
RAM i have tried goes from 2x2Gb OCZ Gold 1333Mhz 1.5v through to 2x4Gb Geil Corsa Enhance 1866Mhz 1.5v.
I will have a good read of the manual and link you sent and see what happens.
If you could let me have the receipt in case i have to go down the RMA route that would be great.
Many thanks for your fast and helpful replies."

Doesn't seem as arsey in the second message. I've deleted my paypal in the time being anyways. Don't have the money for chargebacks & from past threads, seems the buyer is more protected and gets refunded regardless etc, as surely they can't chargeback now, same with a contract phone, if I cancel my direct debit, they still know my details, but they have no consent to take money any more, only pester me with debt collector letters.

I'd say that you are on a sticky wicket. You have sold a board that you yourself have had problems with and that you know via google and the internet is known to be problematic anyway. She can't get it to work and you are surprised?

Anyway, I would tread carefully as ebay and paypal will side with her all day long given the circumstances. You best bet is to hope that she will take the original receipt and go to the shop herself. Other than that you may have to refund her and sort the 'faulty' board yourself.

If I was her I would be well miffed and I would be knocking on your door by now! Laughing

To do what? Give me a blowjob I hope Thumbs Up Laughing

I've been exchanging messages with her most of last night, I think I got my self worked up about it, as she seems alright, she said there was no need to apologize, that I have been fast & helpful in my responses to her & that the receipt would be great if she did have to go the RMA route.

Cool

Hi again.
Soooooo.........had a good play with things today and have got some very odd results.
The board won't boot with a single stick of ram in slot 1 or 2
It will boot and run fine with 1 stick in either slot 3 or 4
It won't boot with 2 sticks in 1-3 or 2-4
It will boot with 2 sticks in 3 & 4
It won't boot with 2 sticks in 1 & 2
Conclusion.....either board is faulty on Dimm 1 & 2
Or cpu is faulty on controller for 1 & 2
It's just sooooo very odd.

2 & 4 would be black
1 & 3 would be blue

Possible dual/quad mode setting? She's using an i5 Ivy Bridge.

Anyhow, found the receipt.
