My waterproof jacket and trousers have started letting me get wet (the trousers were really waterproof when I first got them, the jacket less so.

I've been told that just washing them normally should help sort it out
Wife normally uses powder and softener in the washing machine, do I need to tell her to do anything different?

Or should I be rinsing them in nikwax?

get some soap flakes from boots for 2.50 or the more expensive nikwax tech wash then wash with nikwak tx direct, grangers also do a 2-in-1

you dont wanna use detergent

you can get free nikwax stuff by doing the quiz but they change the products so its for different uses

I went to go outdoors and brought some textile wash and proofed. Was about £5 for a sachet but worked really well. My jacket must be 8yrs old and it needed a wash anyway as was in shed/garage for last 3yrs.

Now it's perfect new zip after old one broke and can't complain.

you are not supposed to use softener. Nor hang in sun.

Put them through the washing machine with Nikwax reproofer. No fabric conditioner no soap. Hang to dry indoors.

If they need washing, use Nikwax Techwash. Again, no fabric conditioner and hang to dry indoors.

Alternatively, Nikwax wash-in Waterproofers can be applied by hand washing. If you wish to avoid waterproofing your hands you will need to wear gloves.

Just to tag onto this ..... the gloves i'm looking at are getting good reviews in everything but waterproofing.

I treat my convertible roof to various chemicals etc to keep it protected and to encourage water to run off it - i presume this will work on gloves and / or the same stuff you spray onto tent canvas etc etc can be used to keep water out?

Use a non-biological detergent. The wife has some for her super sensitive delicate silk unmentionables that I use.

The jackets have a semi permeable membrane inside them. This is what makes it water proof. Not some spray or nix wax.

What the spray or nikwax stuff will do is coat the material on the outside of the jacket to help improve it's water resistant properties.

The bottom line is that if the inner membrane of your jacket is torn or leaks. No amount of nikwax is going to help you.

Search for Nikwax and wash them with it - works perfectly.
