CBR400 problem

right
the other night after about 150km my cbr400 ran outta fuel started to growl then stalled.
fine i switched it to reserve and i was off again
but on my way home after 20km it ran out of fuel again
i thought mmm wierd 20km on a reserve

i filled up with a fresh tank today
went about 5km
then it started making the growling noise like it was gonna run out of fuel again
and making a knocking noise
then i put it on reserve and it was okay again
im thinking all the crap has clogged the carb when i ran out of fuel

Could also be that the crap has blocked the filter thats inline (look at pipe from tank to carb(s), or the filter in the fuel tap is blocked up, you need to unbolt it from the tank to clean it out, and as you say, the carb(s) may want a clean out too.

I wouldn't have thought that was likely, thinking about the routing of the fuel lines. Plus if that was the case, you wouldn't get very far!

sounds a lot like a filter, my wifes cbr was struggling for a while, whem I checked the filter, it was clogged solid, I was struggling to blow through it. New (pattern) fuel filter was a fiver from my local outfit, sorted the problem totally.

Should be where your inside left leg is. If you take the fuel tank off (easy) and trace the line it's obvious where is it. You might be able to clean it out, but a new filter is pretty cheap, as Pete says.

Cleaning out a filter is normally a bad idea, it isnt completly clean and what gets left behind is free to go straight into the carbs.
In line filters are bout £2.50 each and need changing about once a year, if that.
