Hello folks,

as you know, i've got a 1990 535 Virago.

Well, it's done 50k miles and it's starting to fall apart (because i've not really looked after it properly).

Looking for other shaft drive similar style cruisers (preferably straight bars) to buy over the summer and i'm drawing a blank.

Only real "step up" for the same kind of money is a Virago 750, but I was really looking for something a bit differnt.

Looking at between the £500 & £700 mark, preferably no older than 1990.

Any suggestions?

cheers, matt

That's not a massive budget you've got there...

Dunno if it counts as a cruiser but what about something properly old school like a Kawasaki GT 550 or something? Dunno how long they made them for but they're meant to be solid reliable bikes no?

for that money I'd be looking to just repair and do up the current bike.

are you changing for change's sake or because you're unsure about starting on sorting yours out?

Get a GT750 and turn it into a bobber. Hell you might find one at that price.

Quick edit

Chap on another forum selling one for around 500 quid. He is north wales I think so not to far. Its fucking bright green though.

Edit again

Just had a look. He was asking £425 but that might be forum members price. Is Cwmbran, Wales close?

You won't get one for your budget, but as a possible decent step up in shaft drive bikes, and one that would be a decent streetbike and very different to the Virago, how about a Suzuki VX800? Or maybe a Yamaha XJ900 Diversion?

For that sort of money you won't get a Divvy 900 unless it's fucked.

I would say either do yours up with the money or save more. You aren't going to realistically get anything better than what you have for that sort of dosh.

Just logged in to say the same thing as I never noticed your post. You would need to double your cash for a nice divvy 9.

If you cant get more pennies I would suggest looking at 80's bikes. Don't be put off as there is still plenty gems to be had for little money.

Just had to replace the entire front brake caliper (to the tune of £150) and the fork seals need doing (both of them leaking, lowest i've been quoted is £250 for the work, apparently fork seals are an irritating job for garages). Rear suspension is pretty sloppy to and will likely need replacing soon, also she needs a rear tire.

Basicly, I can spend £500 on work that needs doing and new parts, or i can sell it for £500 ish (brought it for £550 2 years ago) and put an extra £200 towards something less falling apart-y
