Road legal quads?

Hello all.

Just been reading up on quads. Still dont know a lot about them, apart from them basically being 4 wheeled scrams.

The road legal crop, what kinda licence do you have to ride one on the road?

You need a full car license as they have four wheels, so are classed as a car

There are some that don't need a car licence.

However the current crop that fall into some weird licening law are really underpowered, so don't seem worth the effort...
in the end you've got the worst point of both vehicles and not many of the good points.

Could you not put something like a Banshee on the road somehow? My mate has one its fast as feck.

You can I believe, but the licencing is different.

The 350 banshee uses an engine based on the ypvs rd350... but seriously tuned ones have been known to get upto 110hp out of them; impressive!

I remember one bloke made a DIY quad with a firebalde engine in it, good for 140+......cost him far too much money and I don't like to think how on earth you'd steer it at 140, let alone hang on.

Dont know a huge deal about the specs for road legal.

But obvious things are they need Lights (brake, head etc) indicators, engine cut off switch and gotta be taxed an licensed.

The thing that really gets me about quads, legally on the roads you do not need to wear a helmet!

Theres two near me who ride around, and its crazy... its just a bike with four wheels... maybe even more dangerous cause its bigger and still no protection!

If its a 125cc or under you can ride 1 on a provisional licence. But I take it ur probably after somthing like a 350 banshee or a 650 Raptor or sumin?

a 4 wheeled 125 would be well slow, then you add my weight-it aint likely to move at all!

a 350 would be ideal. But not this year, probably not the next either.

I believe it's a lot more hassle to get the higher power quads road registered compared to some of the smaller ones that come ready for road use.

I got the impression that the road legal quads are being marketed as more like farm utility vehicles, so you can run them on the road between fields, etc.

That and to those with more money than sense

I saw one at bassets pole a few months ago. It was very silver/chrome and had a designer look about it. So I guess they are out there somewhere

Why not look at trikes instead? less likely to be rolled too.

A company in Lincoln import and road register quads. They were limited to ~30mph. I think they cost around £2.5k, I cant remeber the specifics but i remember i thought they sounded expencive for what they were, but i think the same about 50cc peds!

Haven't found the details, but it seems the maximum power is around 15kw which comes out at about 20hp I think.

I think the biggest capacity is around 300cc, though I dunno if this is legal or because you really don't need more than that.

Is that skip on 2 wheels, 3 or 4? Looks class. A bed on wheels would be better though!

20hp, that aint a lot at all. But its under the requirement of the limitation of the first 2 years of A cat pass. So, it should be ridable under cat A pass. Or, would it be classed as needing full car licence?

I was thinking of a QUAD for despatching but if I did I would have
to pay the Congestion Charge so that's that idea stuffed.

It would be handy when the ice and snow arrives so I could
get to the office but it's in the zone.

Hi

Think the guy who built the skip has done quite a few different cars. As well as the Sofa (the the steering wheel being a Pizza from memory) he has also done a garden shed.

Off road trikes were banned years ago (late 1980s), and it is illegal to sell them. Loads had to be converted to quads, and this was even for ones that would not be used on the roads.
