bike broke down

hi all,

this morning while riding my bike, it suddenly made a small noise and the bike stopped moving forward.

after that i put it in a gear and the bike does not move at all ( first,second ).
i checked and the chain is not snapped .i then suspected that it might be worn clutch but when i put it on stand and then first gear the rear wheel does move and spin but not when put on the ground .


any ideas what it could be

At best your clutch cable needs relacment or adjustment..

At worst your clutch has gone kaput..

after a second look i realised the chain has come off.
i guess it was early morning and i did not check it

what would it come off ? was it too loose do you think ?

i was lucky as when it came off i was at a junction and just about to start moving forward. that mean't i did not ride it for more than 50 60 meters when it came off . would that do any damage to sprokect ?

If it came off without snapping then it was waaaaaaaaay too slack.

Keep on top of your chain slack as I imagine a chain flying off at high speed would not be pretty...

what do you reckon a would have happened if the chain came off high speed ?
would it have look the wheel

any number of things from completely locking your wheel to ripping a hole in the engine or ripping a hole in your leg.

Basically at a minimum you'd be sliding down the road

i should ensure my chain is fully adjusted every 2 weeks then,

how often do you normally do it ?


btw, i just put the chain back on and the chain is almost fully adjusted and not much more place to tight it again in future. does that mean it is a time for new chain ? mine is only 1 year old so don't know why it would need changing after 1 year

I probably go through 2 chains a year if I'm a little lazy with maintaining it.

I'd be looking into a new chain and sprockets, do you have a photo of your rear sprocket?

So far i've changed chain and sprockets on the basis of once a year, definately wouldn't leave a longer gap due to the mileage covered

Cheap small chains can fail in weeks or best months.if ridden hard or not maintained..worth spending a bit extra and getting a branded c&s kit as your sprockets will most probs also be shot if you were on max adjustment.

Check the condition of both chain and sprockets. If it's been that poorly maintained then you may be looking at replacing the lot. Post pics if you're unsure.

thanks guys.

i have adjusted the chain every 2 weeks and lube every week . i did although no lube it for 2 month when initially bought

the milage covered is around 8-9k and the bike is 2012 model

when you guys saying that chain and sproket should be changed at the same time, are there any reason for this?

does it include the sprocket at the back and the one mounted to the engine ?

You don't have to replace sprockets at the same time as the chain. However if you fit a new chain on to worn sprockets, the new chain will wear faster.

As for adjusting the chain. I check my chain adjustment every time I clean + lube the chain (so every weekend) and any time in between then if the bike every feels iffy.

Properly cleaning, lubing and adjusting the chain will maximise the amount of miles that you can get from them and help to ensure that they don't snap on you. I can say that having a chain go on you is not a nice experience, and certainly shows you how important maintenance is (hence why I do it so regularly now).

On the note of chain adjustment, do look up how to do it properly. I thought I was doing it right all this time, until I just couldn't get it right. My Spanish housemate showed me how to do it properly after that.

Heard a few times about a chain potentially slicing into your leg. But assuming the bike has a chain guard as most do, would that ever actually happen? Has it ever happened?
