Bought this a few weeks ago .... eBay item number 300863306545
Any of you guys on here know much about them? Bike actually seems in good mechanical condition or a lot better than it could have been! I've mot'd it etc but was a bit shocked its flat out....and I mean flat out at 60 mph! 50mph is reving it more than is mechanically sympathetic!! I've just changed the rear 4.00 18 pirelli mt43 for a 100/100 mx knobblie as been told the trails I'm going on are rather muddy at the mo and from a bit of local riding the mt43 clogged up easily.
Gearing is 13/48 and with the new tire I'm guessing 50 is now top speed as the side profile is much lower than the mt43.
The motor seems crisp enough and has a fair amount of torque for a small stroker in the lower to mid range rpm. The kips valves can be seen working behind the LHS cover.
The lights don't work or they didnt seem to when I fitted a new tail/ brake bulb and ran the engine....however after a 20 min bit of field work I fitted ( read bodged) a battery in the tool bag for horn and lights... Checked the tail bulb again before fitting the battery and it had blown in spectacular fashion !! So I disconnected the yellow wire from the genny and used the battery to power the lights etc which worked fine so I know the light switch, brake switch and lights were wired up ok.
Headlight was a 5w bulb so I'm guessing that was wrong !
I'm also guessing that it's an ac genny and the little box bolted on top of the air box is a regulator rather than reg/rectifier unit? Any info would help here peeps!!!!
The bike has an fmf gold pipe and no air box lid and a main jet of 160 ....apart from being rather rich for the first few mm of throttle opening the rest feels clean and usable for the abuse it's about to get
Is there anything I should look out for that the kdx was known to suffer from or that needs changing or worth inspecting any mods that will improve it?
This poor thing hadn't been started in 3 years before I bought it ( ran a litre of 15/1 thru it to lube the important bits before taking it for a spin) have to say for a premix bike the carb innards were spotless clean! Gearbox oil was pure white cream but does not seem to have used any coolant so changed it and keeping fingers crossed for now
Sorry for the long post but thought some of you guys might have some knowledge of these little kwaks or links to service data etc?
P.S total noob at off roading...what tires do you guys think will work best around snowdonia? ____________________ Current bikes...cbr929, KDX200's, Rd125lc mk2, RGV250's |

Ok, i'll go then.
Nice bike you got there, price looks pretty reasonable.
Never had one of these bikes, but from what can gather off t'internet the FMF pipe was one of the best modifications for performance. Its worth de-carbonising the expansion chamber and repacking the silencer, if you don't know when it was last done. Also, usual routine of new air filter, plug etc wont go amiss as it sounds like it hasn't had much love.
Worth having a check of the condition of the cylinder and piston with a compression tester. The piston and rings wear quicker than the more road orientated trail bikes so better to be safe than sorry. The barrel is lined with an expensive Nicasil plating, so rebores cost a fortune. Better to change out a worn piston rather than risk it damaging the bore.
Jeff Fredette did a lot of develepment on the KDX200 for racing purposes. Some of his modifications can be seen here.

Most people have different opinions on tyres. It does depend on whether you need to ride on the road at all, and what sort od terrain you'll be riding on. As a starter, a pair of Pirelli MT21's will be a great improvement on MT43's. ____________________ 1988 Kawasaki KMX 200

Cheers for the input dangerousdave! I fitted a new air filter today as the old one was aged from standing rather than filthy ( came with 2 old spare ones.....bin job!) have a new plug... Keeping it with me as spare for now as I know from experience single 2t's can kill them in less than an hours riding if the mixture is out and better safe than sorry. Nicosil bores I'm used to as used to race RGV 250's a few years ago so yes ain't cheap for a replated bore! I'll do the compression test when I can remember who the hell I lent it to 5 yrs or so ago lol.
Will take the pipe off tomorrow and have a peek at the piston for blow down and scores etc and the end can ( dep) deffo sounds like it needs a re pack as it sounds a bit ahem "crisp" at the mo! So will have a gander at the top end/kips and exhaust for the usual sludge.
Interesting article re jeffs mods plenty to think about there thanks for the link and tire advice! Kinda hope the motor holds together for the first few ride outs before pulling it down for a refresh....it's a new toy after all so not sure I'm cut out for the offroading yet! Or if I'll need to upgrade to cope with my 100kg mass lol but been to the top of the local mountain via pathways today and it seemed up for it so looking forward to some warmer weather and a fun way to spend a few days exploring the local green lanes!
Cheers for the input ____________________ Current bikes...cbr929, KDX200's, Rd125lc mk2, RGV250's |

Cheers karl. Apart from the water being lost from the expansion bottle every time I top it up the water level in the rad stays full so having done about 70 miles on it now I think it's just Water ingress with standing or the low breather tube for the gearbox. It's due it's next change now so I'll see if the gearbox oil is improving! ____________________ Current bikes...cbr929, KDX200's, Rd125lc mk2, RGV250's |
