Anyone ever experienced this?

I called up to book an MOT, I'm told by the garage they don't book them in.

I told the guy that I'd come around at 11:30. He replied we're open from 9am just drop the bike off. We don't do MOTs while you wait.

What the fuck do they expect me to do? Ride the bike there then walk home? I bet he doesn't walk home when having his car MOT'd.

Oh well I guess they've lost £35 for the 10-15 mins that it takes to conduct an MOT.

Avoid JS Motorcycles

If you're still in Norwich I always take mine to P&H on Harvey lane and they will do it while you wait.

Tell them you want a test ride of one of their bikes for sale. You only want a half hour ride, but will need it the whole day as you don't know when you'll get round to it.

Thanks will give them a call. I normally use S&S Motors, but thought I'd use the place I bought the bike from since they passed it last time with loud exhausts.

If they don't pre book MOT's how are you supposed to obey the law when you are only allowed to ride a non MOT'd bike to a pre booked MOT?

They probably don't want you to see them ride your bike to another garage to get it MoT'd, I knew a garage years ago who did this, they advertised MoT's yet they took the cars to another garage who did the MoT for them.

£35 for an MOT? Laughing

£29 is the norm. It may even be a charge set by VOSA, cant quite remember the ins and outs of it without research..

Maximum allowable charge for a motorcycle MOT is £29.65. You must be given the option to watch the MOT being done (providing that you don't interfere with it).

VOSA might want to know.

My MOT usually lasts 10 mins of "umm" and "ahh", kick a tyre and give certificate.

Only had 1 fail there over 10 bikes... wasn't even my bike Laughing I knew there was an issue on the way too Mr. Green

I can only ever remember actually waiting for an MOT to be done once. That was because I knew the tester and he wouldn't stop harping on about his Fireblade, to such a degree that he'd carried out the MOT while singing its praises while testing my X5 (as I believe was the testicle in question). Normally I leave it, say 'an hour OK?' and then go for a walk. Come back, bit of paper ready and away we go.

Up until the new test came in, you could just walk in off the street and get an MOT there and then. Now you need to book with most places.

This, had my bikes MOT couple of days ago.

Showed up. He came out, tried the brake and indicator lights. Turned to me and said 'Just give it 10 minutes for the computer to update'.
£30 job jobbed. There, 'tested' and home within 45 minutes!

Bingo!.. I suspect.

From the list of MOT centres from last year the only one with their postcode is listed as 'Mercedes' - probably doesn't do bike MOTs!

I presume they are offering a 'MOT Service' of taking your bike to get an MOT and if need be slipping the bloke a fiver to fail it on a few things, which they'll then charge you to get sorted.

I've actually 'helped' do a few MOTs on my bikes - brake test machine does take a little getting used to!

Place down the road here generally runs a 'drop it in, in the morning' routine, but they are about 5 minutes walk away, so not a big problem for me.

Cuppa tea and a chat while I waited for my MOT last week. Was quite a pleasant experience, apart from the temperature.

I would have thought most places would want you to book it, as not all their mechanics will be VOSA authorised.

Mine usually last 5 minutes, plus another 15min or so, as VOSA has stipulated how long a bike MOT should last (20min or so, iirc), and as it never does, the MOT place just has to keep you waiting until they can 'complete' the MOT. These times are spot checked by VOSA and if they find that a garage is taking less than the stipulated time, they can lose their licence.

mine was done last week

dropped it off went to mums for a brew and then walked back and picked it up
the bloke who did it only does mots on saturday

he spends 9 hours on saturday solidly doing mots 3 an hour all day

he doesnt book any other jobs in on sat so getting him to work on a bike is a bit of a pain

last year i used someone else

dropped bike off at 9:30am

will be ready in an hour

"ok i said i will go and have some breakfast and a cuppa"

hour and a half later i came back and bike hadnt moved

two hours later still hadnt moved

started it a ten to one he had three to do and he closed at one

his helper polished the saddle and started trying to put air in the tyres without checking or knowing what psi they should be at

got out at half one and swore i would never take a bike to him again

Being allowed to watch of course means you're required to have completed the necessary HSE training and be wearing suitable personal protective equipment. e.g. safety footwear, approved eye protetion, protective clothing, ear protection, hand protection etc.

So stuff watching it, one may as well nip over to the local cafe for a brew and a roll on square sliced sausage. (mit Tattie Scone) Smile

I love getting my bike Mo-Tea-ed.

£25 for a bike MOT at my local. Dunno why they wouldn't have bookings, what an inconvenience. I am convinced my local doesn't even do any of the checks on my bikes, they've never, ever given me an advisory or anything. That and my DRZ's zorst was clearly too loud and they didn't even say anything Thumbs Up

Also free tea & coffee and TV while you wait Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Threads like this make me realize how good my mot guy is, he gives a time to be there and 9/10 the bike is straight in and done, he gives no leeway on safety stuff but he has actually threatened to fail a bike for having it's baffles IN! (Crossplane R1, he insisted the baffles were removed and the bike given a good rev...)

Also they charge £15.
