saw this on GJ's, and no it's not an April fools. 62 out of the 120 competitors have been fined.

Quote:
The first round of the British Enduro Championship has been spoiled by the police, who on one of the few road sections, decided to nick all the competitors with undersized number plates, issuing £60 penalty notices!
This is despite the organisers contacting the police beforehand (and giving the lazy twats something to do with their day) and getting the go ahead to run the road sections with the bikes in this condition on the grounds that full-sized number plates would be useless. (They get ripped off the bike within minutes).
This event is bringing in loads of money to the area, with world-class riders competing and all tourist based business benefiting enormously.
Unfortunately due to the lazy police filling in their quotas this way, the event will probably be run elsewhere in the future.
Absolutely unbelievable.

It's not as though they were hooning around a housing estate, causing a general nuisance and being anti-social. They were taking part in a properly organised event Evil or Very Mad

This isn't the 70s/80s and bikes and the sport has moved on. Having full sized plate would be ridiculous and not fit for purpose.

The road section is small and is not for "racing". It's just to link the course. I've never seen the welsh police do this on the brechfa, Crychan or welsh 2 day because they know better. They know that enduro events contribute substantial amounts to the local economy.

People who support the police are the Greenlane Hero's who have no experience of organised events.

Why even bother fitting a number plate like that? Is it a requirement to meet the rules or something?

Fuck it, I would have pinned it passed them, if I knew what they were doing.

It's a requirement to have a numberplate to ride on the road.

You'll also have separate 'race' numbers stuck all over your bike, which'll make it pretty easy to track down who you are.

Try riding at the speed they are riding on the terrain they do with big bits of plastic flapping around - there's a good reason that mudguards have got smaller as bike performance (suspension etc more than engine) has improved.

And regards the flapping about - They couldn't tack one on temporarily with velcro?

The argument isn't about the legality of the bikes, it's the heavy-handed arrogant attitude of the cops in enforcing a minor infraction and disturbing a properly organised event.

They obviously PLANNED to come along and nick every illegally-plated bike but they could just as easily have contacted the organisers and made it plain that they would be there enforcing them religiously thus still doing their job but not at the expense of public trust and good relations.

And by the same vein, the 'organisers' should have contacted the police to get clarification on the plates issue, if the didn't, then it really wasn't a properly organised event, and they didn't have an exception for displaying illegal plates or no plates, and as such they should have complied with the law .

It's a non story, people throwing their dummies out of the pram, because they have been caught out.

Whether or not the police should or shouldn't have done it, is neither here nor there, they have the right to do it, they have the right to fine any vehicle not complying with the law, and as such have done so.

Did they have illegal plates? Yes... Did they go on to the public highway? Yes... Should they have got fines? Technically, yes... Morally, probably not, but it's down to the event organisers to clear such things, if they didn't do so, then really they should be stumping up for the costs for those fined.

Unless of cause their 'rules' state that bikes must be road legal, which I'm guessing it does... Considering they have illegal plates, instead of displaying no plates...

There's none so blind as those who don't want to see, I guess.

I'll not argue against the technically illegal state of carrying a small plate but the cops CAN use discretion, they could have done exactly the same job by pulling the people leaving the event on their bikes and taking to the road with mainstream traffic, whilst causing no disruption and actually catching people who habitually flount the numberplate law.

Instead of that they chose to take the easy pickings. If they were really concerned about the legailty of the attending bikes they would have had a vosa/traffic unit there inspecting all of them for mechanical faults. All they wanted to do was harrass the event attendees and make a few quid for the coffers.

Not fit for purpose? If they're on the road (not racing), then full-sized plates would be exactly fit for purpose - the purpose of complying with the relevant legislation.

What's fit for purpose about not having a mudguard, which might incidentally protect the number plate from damage?

A quick search would suggest that the Welsh events you've mentioned are administrated differently (correctly?) and roads are closed to public traffic while the event takes place. A bit like the IOM TT.

In the Isle of Man the law provides a dispensation for race bikes travelling between the place they are kept and the paddock / grandstand.
Is there any reason why a similar dispensation could not be put in place in the UK for competition bikes which travel for short distances on the Public Highway during an organised event?

From the TT Regs:-
Machines on the Public Highway
The law on the Isle of Man provides that no racing machines should be ridden on a public highway except during the period commencing 3 hours
before, during and 2 hours after a scheduled road closure period from where the machine is kept, directly to the start of the course, from a point on
The Course directly to the place it is kept or vice versa, or between points on the course.
During this same period the machine does not have to comply with the Maintenance and Use and The Lighting Regulations.
The rider must however, have a current valid driving licence for that particular class of machine.
Third party insurance must be in force before the machine is used on a public highway. Cover can be obtained from the Race Office. Machines used
on public roads, outside, these times must comply in every respect with Manx Road Traffic Legislation (Race numbers must not be displayed).
Any competitor reported as having ridden his/her machine in such a manner as to constitute a nuisance to the public may be disqualified or otherwise
penalised.
