PostPosted: 12:49 - 22 Nov 2004    Post subject: My alleged speeding offence Reply with quote

Well after replying to the original NIP saying I couldn't be sure who was riding without seeing the evidence I got a letter today enclosing some prints from their video (shown below).

Seems like it was a mobile camera as there are no road markings. Looks like I'm being done for doing 42mph in a 30.

Apparently there's half a second between the two pics so I'm going to check the distance I've moved to verify my speed. By my calculations 42mph is 30.8 feet in that time and I'm not convinced there is that big a gap shown.

I guess if it does come out to around 42mph I will have to hold my hands up, but as can be seen it was an empty wide straight road in good visibility, so I do think this particular trap was all about making money rather than road safety. Confused

Very interesting, if your calculations are correct. That doesn't look like 30 feet from here.

Thats a good 3 'bike lengths or more - that'd be about right then... front tyre to front tyre - not the actual gap you can 'see'...
Nice to see you actually got the images sent to you - I had always been lead to believe that you didn't get sight of the 'evidence' until you had confirmed you were going to court...

Couldn't find any info on the size of road markings (so you could work out how far you'd travelled based on the right turn arrow).

However, did merge the two pics if you can work it out that way.

I agree it doesn't look all that far between the two shots.
Hope this helps.

at 40 you'd have gone a lot further than that in half a second.
30.8 feet by my calculations too. Google converter/calculator's great! Thumbs Up
Ran a google search for 42 miles in feet
then ran that result/3600/2 though google
=30.8

Measure the number plate from the two shots. Work out its difference in size. Then, ermmm.... errrmm.... someone here tell me how that helps? Very Happy

EDIT: Measure your number plates width for real. Then I'm sure you can calculate its distance from the camera in the two shots by working out its width in the pics.... not sure how though Thinking

Well I used the perspective tool in PaintShop Pro 8 to produce a sort of overhead merged image. The two bikes now occupy approximately the same space on the road in this picture. I've measured the distance between the back of the front contact patch to the back of the rear contact patch as five feet and this is what one grid line vertically represents.

Unfortunately the distance between the blue line and the red line is just about 6 and a half boxes which is 32.5 feet... so even allowing for the rough and ready method, looks like they've got me... Crying or Very sad

Oh well, at least I taught myself to play around with perspective...

2nd vote for that Shocked
Don't want to dispute your perspective work....but....
found this link - https://www.hmso.gov.uk/si/si2002/20023113.htm#sch13
in which this image - https://www.hmso.gov.uk/si/si2002/023113bs.gif
indicates the right angle arrow (at the bottom) can be 8000mm, 16000mm or 32000mm. Maybe this can help work out how far you've travelled.

Thanks for all the opinions and suggestions.

I like Stryker's idea of working out the distance travelled from the relative sizes of the numberplate in the pictures, but does anyone know the formulas for this???

One part of me is just prepared to pay 60 quid and forget about it. For the money involved I can't really justify spending loads of time on it, but on the other hand I'm really irritated about the whole thing and given the road conditions feel like checking out that everything is legally correct.

At least I've got a new avatar out of it...

Numberplate method is tricky and possible...but the angle of the plate in relation to the camera also changes in each image so that would also have to be accounted for.
Could be worked out but I can't be arsed!
Perspective tool seems pretty accurate to me. Thumbs Up

you'd surely need to know the focal length of the lens used to do an accurate comparison on relative plate size?

haha - excellent change to your avatar boyo! Thumbs Up

After the slating i got for saying i was unlucky on the speeding, i cant belive this is a topic!!

When i was caught the conditions ment that an accurate measure of my speed was close to impossible if this topic seems feasable.

Just pay the fine man

They can only use officially painted markings for cameras and it has to show the whole marking.
You could get away with that.
You know it's illegal now if there were no speed camera warning signs within a set radius even for mobile cameras.

Have to agree with that, if it was just 60 quid I'd write out the cheque here and now. As it is I don't see anything wrong with checking the facts before deciding whether to admit guilt

I think the rules must be different for mobile cameras as regards road markings as I'm sure(! Shocked ) they wouldn't set up an obviously illegal trap...
