I know the where a fair few two stroke 250s in the '70s and '80s - but what were some decent 4T 250s from those decades? CB250RS, perhaps? Were there some off-road ones?

I love the look of the XL250 and the XS250 - especially the yam. A lot like the Z250. What went wrong with the XS250? There was a good XS750 (custom, NB - a triple) on ebay last week - if you like your early jap cruisers. I don't usually, but this one was nice - it was the one Triumph ripped off with the T140D. The XS750 apparently had a problem with the vacuum petcock, which was prone to leaking petrol into the crank case so catastrophically that it could cause total seizure. Dunno if a similar thing afflicted the 250.

CB250 K-2 (there was no K1, just a mock-up demonstrator).
Good for a genuine 90+mph WITHOUT exploding, imploding, siezing, needing pistons/rings/ plugs every 5000 miles or gulping petrol.
Handled rather well for the day, braked fine, looked good too. In any head to head on a good run, it would beat the equivalent Yam or Suzuki by dint of not stopping for fuel. Subsequent models got slower and then anemic.. No idea why Honda took that decision.
No other 4T 250cc twin has matched it, not even the latest incarnations......

The XS250 was okayish when running, but a swine to start, especially when the weather was very cold. Mine was bad from new, I believe they were badly carbed from the factory. Thank god for the kick start back up or the battery would have died of a heart attack.

I got rid of it after 6 months and bought a CX500.

They were all shite compared to the strokers I'm afraid. There's something about four stroke parallel twins that I personally find dull.

Except the CB250RS was a single-pot. Smile

No one has mentioned specificly the venerable 250 Superdream ?
Not fast , not fancy, but they`re still going and a good few of them still about.
Surely that is some testiment to how good? they are/were?

I've always been told that the Suzuki GSX250 was a better and faster bike than either the Superdream or the XS250, but i think it failed to sell in significant numbers compared to the other two machines.

Id say the Honda CB250RS, the VT250 and the Yamaha SRX250 were probably the best 1980's 250cc 4strokes though. The Yamaha would be my choice!

My brother was hooning around on one of these when on 'L' plates

-until he tried to corner too fast on knobbly trials tyres. The resulting broken leg was the lesson learnt Rolling Eyes

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4c/1988_FZR_250_2KR.jpg ^Nearly bought one of these in 2011, in black and gold colours, was put off by rumours of big end shell failure due to oil galley design flaw.

All mid to late 80's Il 4 4T 250's, some images are of newer incarnations that had less slabby plastics.

Oh yeah and TL 250, only ever ridden the 125, I admit not as mad a s a DT but still was fun to ride and rather satisfying exhaust note too Very Happy
