Ok, not a bike trip this time, a cage trip. Took the kids to the sea in Northern Natal. Empty beaches and no more than 50 people there.

It used to be beaches were segregated. Now to get a decent beach without the masses and where your stuff wont get stolen while you swim it is 50 km of sand road access only by 4x4, and a gate with a cover charge and one hell of a long walk unless your staying in the chalets, where the sea is at your doorstep.

This way, you can avoid this

https://www.thebombsurf.com/files/1/images/image[25].jpg

and get what is shown below instead.

Departure was at dawn, as it is a 650 km drive, the last 50 at 20 km/hr

The road was empty.

Went through a darkie homeland,

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG-20130330-00982_zps6a696ca3.jpg

and cane fields

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG-20130330-00986_zps2d0c3916.jpg

then onto the Zululand coastal plain. A cage eye's view of life really sucks. I really hate caging.

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG-20130330-00991_zpsaac1942a.jpg

The sand road is single lane and goes through a mangrove swamp. very sandy and muddy in places

The view from our chalet.

Duiker on the lawn. Plenty of monkeys around as well. The kind with tails. Thieving bastards, just like their cousins Mr. Green

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/DSCN0414_zps212ea3aa.jpg

The weather was stunning and hot. I got burnt to a crisp and it is blerry sore, even though I stayed under shelter or had a shirt on, except when I was in the water

what else to do in the evening?

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG-20130330-01007_zps427d09d0.jpg

First evenings braai, pork chops, braai sarmies, potato and onion bake and cauliflower and cheese on the braai

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG-20130330-01009_zps0c2f1c81.jpg

what to do for lunch? take wood down to the beach and braai boerewors rolls

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/DSCN0425_zps0a651973.jpg

In the evening? sundowners and braai 300 g steaks, 2 for me and one for each kid. A 300 g steak is for a kid. No where near enough for a full grown man. with a mushroom and onion sauce

Nice sunsets there. Took the pics special for someone who likes sunsets but couldn't be there. shame. Mr. Green

Ja. Good time to go. In autumn the temperature is still at about 30 C, the water is really warm, and the chance of rain is far less. It is still warm enough in mid winter, but the days are short.

The Indian Ocean is a stunning place.

Not every day. But on holiday why be in a kitchen? So every meal is outdoors. when I was a batchelor and living in digs, about every day was a braai. we were 3 men, the first one home started the fire...

Just pack plenty of beer, meat and wine. A cool box of beer on ice, sitting in the gazebo in the shade, and swimming every once in a while.....life is hard....

I imagine over there it isn't really called barbecuing. Sure they are cooking on a barbie but it isn't as much as a novelty as it is to us brits. We'd say "Come over for a BBQ' they'd say 'come over for dinner' My family in Canada are the same. Even when it is 4ft of snow they will cook on the BBQ! It is just the norm.

Hey, its not my fault. Blame it on your ancestors for not emigrating from that cold, damp grey island Razz

The sharks didn't get me, but the sun did....

Im peeling like a snake from the top down, starting with my forehead

For sure, Braaiing is as normal as brits going to the local.

the 4ft of snow, I can do without....that is weather for eskimos, not white people!

The kids used to do it in past years. But since they are both competitive swimmers they seem to have lost interest in boards and such.

Then your crime has started?

In idaho I noticed the yanks leave their keys in the ignition, doors unlocked etc. I asked them do you have blacks here. He replied ' blacks? Well we had 1 once, but he started stealing so the mexicans chased him out of town'

There were none at the beach I went to so didn't lock our doors, you can leave your wallet, towels, chairs etc at the beach and go back to the cabin.

Just had to close the cabin doors due to monkeys. They steal just like their bruthas.

Reminds me of a trip to the beach a few years ago.... actually a couple
4x4 adventure through the swamps of Somerset to get there....

Though, mainly only becouse my mother was driving and the kids egged me on to take the short-cut!

Wide open, empty beaches, blue seas and wonderful sunsets
https://sphotos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/542820_563529247005330_1385505115_n.jpg
And not just in what passes for summer here.
(Those were taken August, high-Season)
These were taken on another adventure to 'find' a beach (I knew where we were going all along, but dont tell the kids!) One bored week-end in the Winter Half-Term, about the beginning of March, would you believe.

Who says V8's dont 'do' water?
That took us through a stunning little gorge...

And an idylic little beach, all to ourselves.

We convinced ourselves that the deliciouse fish and chips, were freshly landed on the quays we had just been walking along (not arrived on a train, packed in ice from Portugal, as probably closer to the truth) Before watching the sun set...

Britain has many faults.... but you don't need to go halfway around the world to find 'Adventure', open spaces or beautiful scenery.... if you are prepared to go look for it.
