Hi guys,

I picked up an 11 year old Suzuki GN last week but I have only one key for it. My worry is that the ignition slot/barrel doesn't lock the key in place, so the key is free to fall out.

A friend of mine is under the impression that it would be ok for me to remove the key once the bike is running, however that seems a little unsafe to me. When I was knocked off my last bike, the first thing I did was turn off the ignition.

I have had a spare key cut, however this is even worse (as it's larger) and wobbles disconcertingly! I may try and get onto Suzuki, however any suggestions/opinions on this would be appreciated Smile

If you can ride without the key in it, why not just do that? You can always turn it off via the kill switch if you come off?

That was my plan, just wanted to make sure it wasn't a bad idea Razz

Bodge solution: remove key whilst riding, wire in a kill-switch for emergencies.

Good solution: replace ignition barrel with a good and working spare/OEM replacement.

Or further bodge; attach some velcro or a loop to the keychain and velcro it or loop it around some bit of the bike so it can't go anywhere if it does get loose.

I have my ignition in the side panel, the key also doesn't lock in as yours, I just take it out and put it in my trouser pocket (Zipped safely away), use the kill switch to turn her off, remembering to turn the ignition off after Thumbs Up

Get another key cut.

Given your description, you probably don't even need to have one cut. There's an even chance you could turn it on and off with a screwdriver, which is probably how it landed up like that in the first place.

My key will always pull out while running, so did the previous bike.

It won't ever fall out. So don't worry about it.

My bike did this when I first had it, the previous owner (blurredman) made me aware of it and had a climbing clip to secure the key in place but I could never be bothered to clip it on every ride Laughing

I just replaced the barrel with a pattern part for just over a tenner. Sure the keys for the ignition are different to those for the helmet lock and steering lock but that is because I am too cheap to pay for a new set of locks Laughing
