Probably not helpful to you, but the clutch on my KTM 690 enduro went in Spain - the 'KTM Assist' (which came with the bike as I got it new) were very helpful - they translated with the Spanish KTM garage and when they couldn't get parts in time, they arranged for flights home for me and the bike to be repatriated too.

Thankfully the bike was still ridable if I kept the revs low, so I took it easy and let them arrange to collect the bike from the airport where my flight was booked - meaning minimum hassle for me.

Overall, very happy with the experience (bar missing some riding I was hoping for, of course.)

ADAC have been great when needed them.

Put me up in a hotel when the garages were closed then picked the bike up the next morning to be fixed.

Another time they convinced a Kawasaki dealership to stay open past hours to sort out my front blow out. Which was handy because it was looking like all garages would be closed for 3 days. They offered a flight home or to hire a car for me to drive back too.

I've never had to use it, but ADAC also offer very good 'personal' cover - I've had it in the past because it's about the only way to cover a 7.5t lorry motorhome reasonably - it actually comes out cheaper than UK companies by a chunk, but offers for European cover.

They use the AA in when in the UK which is the only downside.

It's about £65.

The second time I used them I'd actually not been a member for 2 years, but called them anyway. Told them my expired membership number and they still sorted everything out without charge.

Yes ..............
In July 2012 my Stator fried itself, taking out the Reg/Rec and the battery leaving me stranded while at the summit of Col de Madeleine in the French alps after I pulled up to take photos, & it wouldn`t re-start.
I managed to free wheel 5 miles down the mountain to the town at the bottom, and called aunty carols lackeys the AA, 5hrs later a recovery truck turns up, and takes me to a local garage at Saint Jean du Mauriene. Where it was diagnosed the rec/rec & battery was fugged. But not the stator.
Under the term of the euro recovery policy, IF the bike can be fixed locally, it must be repaired and the owner has to pay the repair bill. the bike will NOT be recovered back to the UK because it CAN be repaired locally. Only IF the vehicle is irreparable or broken beyond economic repair, will they initiate recovery back to the UK.
Which mean`t I had to spend 2 days in a local hotel (at my cost) while waiting for parts to arrive, I then found myself with a repair bill of €723 Sick
However they failed to correctly diagnose that the stator had failed, as it was breaking down when hot. so with a new Reg/rec & battery I paid up Sick and headed towards home, only to find 130 miles later the bike had been running on its new battery, & when that ran flat I found myself at the side of the road again. 2hrs later the AA had recovered me again, this time near J31b on the A6 at villefranche-sur-saone, albeit to a local car main dealer, who made sure I was looked after, and made additional arrangements for me, as soon as it was decided enough was enough and the AA would rent me a car to continue back up to Zeebrugge. the local garage arranged for a taxi to the hertz office, and a local English speaker to assist me, in getting hire car piad for by the AA. then I was on my way in a car, 600 miles overnight to the ferry.
However this is where its get interesting, as over the next few days at my insistence, I got them to transfer the bike to the Triumph dealer in Lyon so the bike could be diagnosed, afterall the 1st garage should have fixed it ......... shouldn`t they? Rolling Eyes
Oh and don`t forget the immortal words IF the bike can be fixed locally, it must be repaired and the owner has to pay the repair bill the bike will NOT be recovered back to the UK because it CAN be repaired locally
The triumph dealer finally diagnosed the stator fault, and it needed another reg/rec & battery + labour. Which mean`t I was facing a possible bill from the triumph dealer of over €1200 for repairs, add in the cost of £400 for travel back to the UK, accommodation, fuel, tolls & ferry for the bike back to the UK I was facing another bill, this time for a total of around €2000.
This was on top of the delay caused by the AA sueing the 1st garage for botching the 1st repair & over charging me, and the costs incurred by the AA for the 2nd recovery, the car hire etc, that they where trying to back charge the 1st garage for, and at the same time recover some or all of the cost I incurred for the botched repair.
Yet the AA where still adamant that the bike could be repaired locally (by the Triumph garage in Lyon) and they need not recover the bike back to the UK at their cost.

So 6 weeks later, they caved in, and arranged for my bike to be brought back to the UK.
The day after it arrived, I fitted a spare stator I had in the garage, a Mosfet reg/rec I got from the USA and a new battery I got in evilBay. The whole job took me 2hrs+ to do and cost me £80

Would I go to Europe without any recovery cover ..........NO!
Despite having a rough experience, after standing my ground, they sent my bike back

I've always had my bikes fixed locally but they were just for things like a front blow out or fried battery.

ADAC took care of the accommodation costs and labour, but I had to pay for the costs of the battery and tyre.

Sounds like AA suck.

I don`t blame the AA as such, I didn`t read the T`s & C`s of the policy before I went

Not on the bike but I have in the car last year if it helps - we weren't repatriated though.

I'd arranged to go and visit the Fiancée's family in Berlin (she was in the car with me) and we'd decided to take the car and drive from Manchester to Berlin as I wanted to take a mountain bike, lots of camera equipment, motocross gear and general luggage for a two week stay. The car was a Peugeot 306 1.9 non turbo diesel and it was 13 years old at the time. We got it covered for the entire journey the day before we left for £72 with Green Flag.

Lo and behold, after driving 900 miles in 22 hours and just 15 miles outside of Berlin the clutch disintegrated leaving us stranded at the side of the autobahn. I was rather tired and not quite thinking straight but at least remembered we'd bought breakdown cover! Green Flag answered after two rings and took care of the lot. We were recovered within the hour (and it only took that long as we broke down in rush hour so the recovery truck got caught up in traffic) and were given the option of taking the car to a Peugeot dealer to have it fixed (at our cost) and given a hire car (at their cost) or taken to a destination of our choice. We chose to be taken to our final destination as we knew family would know some local mechanics who'd do the job much cheaper than a main dealer and that was no problem for them.

They were very clear and seemed almost apologetic that we wouldn't be eligible for a hire car if we took the car to somewhere other than a main dealer. They were quick to answer the phone and were very efficient and helpful every time I rang them. We asked the recovery guy who came out to tow us how much he'd of charged had we not been covered and he said he charges something like 200 euros an hour so the £72 was definitely a bargain.

I was a bit worried that as we'd chosen not to get the car fixed at an approved main dealer that we wouldn't be covered for the remainder of the policy but I was assured by two different people at the company that any further journey once the car had been fixed (by any means) would be counted as a separate incident and would be treated as such so we didn't have to worry about anything breaking on the way back home either.

Yea, it should cover for everything - and the only one to cover a 7.5t motorhome at a semi-reasonable price.

After a £300 charge to get my motorhome 20 minutes home, I went for ADAC despite being covered on one or two other policies.

Ledig means Single, so if you're married you'll want to change that.

Kundenkarte is the equivalent of a debit card.

I crossed out the ADAC world magazine, as you probably don't want that being delivered to you every month.

Once you send the form you won't hear anything back ADAC, or at least I didn't.

The next you'll know about it is in a a week or two then your membership pack drops through the letterbox.

I never hear anything after renewing so always send an email to ask for membership confirmation.

Always get an email back within a day or two saying it is all ok.

The application has been sent. so it should be interesting to see how I get on.
Even though I have cover with aunty carol for the bike, the ADAC cover will also allow me to wander across the channel in the car without worry. With the additional reassurance that should Aunty Carol fail to assist me with the bike, I will have the ADAC as backup
Once again guys ........... thank you for your assistance Karma

Edit: They have accepted payment, I`m now awaiting the documents in the post

I'm tempted to get ADAC BC as the AA and RAC appear to be rubbish in comparison.

RAC man collared me outside a shop saying we can beat your breakdown cover quote.
I said thats unlikely since it's £70 for annual full European inc any vehicle and repatriation.

After I told him its ADAC he said "yeah, they've started cracking down on that"

Of course, people joining from the uk, telling them they are from the uk any buying the relevant policy because we're from the uk.

Going be a huge crack down, sour wanker.

I hope the crackdown doesn`t happen for some time. As there will be a lot of annoyed brits when they do. Crying or Very sad

When buying anything online, nothing is ever 100% secure
Its a leap of faith, but I took the plunge recently, and within a week the membership card etc was on my doorstep. Ok ... unless your fluent in German and can do it online, which I doubt as the online process doesn`t allow for non German addresses, the method in the post above is probably the simplest option for non German residents
Maggot wrote:

Why not, its probably as good, if not better than any service you`ll get from a UK based supplier, who will charge more money

I also understand that the benefits are as follows
Quote:
Listed below are some of the items covered by ADAC Partner Plus.

1. Breakdown Covers any vehicle you are driving + your spouse/partner. vehicle of any Age.

2. Caravans and Trailers are covered while attached to the car for any problem inc help with punctures and any part of the vehicle that fails, Single axle, a Twin axle is covered as long as axles are not more than a meter apart. That the vehicle is no more than 2.55 meters wide, 10 meters long and 3 meters in height. Permissible weight of up to 3.5 ton.

3. The Partner Plus Package for €98.70 offers the following coverage Worldwide, except where stated otherwise.

Repatriation in case of illnesses or injury, by ADAC Flying Doctor Service, if necessary.

Travel expenses up to €512 to visit a close relative who has to remain in hospital at least 2 weeks while on holiday.

Repatriation of Children.

Repatriation of Pets.

Return transport of vehicle if owner himself is unable to drive back.

Cash for emergencies up to €500, including return transport in case of death.

Costs for interpreter up to €160 (worldwide except for Germany)

Shipping cost for eyeglasses and medication (worldwide except for Germany)

Additional costs up to €2600 for unplanned return back home.

65 Euros per person per night for up to 3 nights additional hotel expenses incurred as a result of a medical emergency.

Assistance to recover or replace travel documents (up to €260)

Up to €103 expenses for emergency transfer of funds.

Up to €120 for replacement of a lost or defective car key while on holiday (Europe only).

Shipping costs for spare parts (all Europe except Germany).

Any import duties payable if vehicle is scrapped and related scrapping charges (all Europe, except Germany)

Other points are:-

If Caravan breaks down you will get service for it but not a rental caravan.

Covered full recovery of your car and caravan back to your home town if cannot be repaired in 3 days.

If you get recovery for your car they will pay for passengers repatriation by first class train tickets or economy air tickets. or rental for a car for 7 days.

If it is a relatively minor repair and does not need repatriation ADAC covers costs of up to 200 Euros to tow you to the nearest garage within 80 km (50 miles) radius of where you breakdown.

ADAC is a club and it's partners in the UK are the AA and the RAC.

All contact numbers in Europe have English speaking staff. These numbers are listed in the Members Manual or on Card.

Fuel. If filling the car up with fuel in Germany at a Shell Garage, show your ADAC Membership Card and you will receive a 2% Discount off Bill. Every little helps.

UP DATED JUNE 2012. If you should breakdown or have an accident with the car rendering it un-drivable, away from the caravan (ie on camp site. ) ADAC will provide you with a tow car to continue journey or for you to repatriate it back to the UK. On arrival at your home ADAC will sort out repatriation of the tow car to its Country of origin.

ANOTHER ISSUE. If you should breakdown on a French Motorway no Organization is allowed to tow you off except for the French Motorway Authorities. Unfortunately they demand fee for this service which can be quite a high price. The only way you can recoup your payment is to contact ADAC and they will re-in burse you. I would think this would apply to any other UK Breakdown Insurer but not sure.

Interested to know how it works with them. Are you dealing with a German call centre when you use them and if so is there any language barrier?
I'm currently with the RAC but a single Euro trip with them would be £150 for two weeks so ADAC sounds a very good alternative, Vehicle Rescue Direct whose cheap single trip cover I took out before have a 16 year age limit on vehicles so are no use for me now.
So I take it you can use them at home in the UK for recovery just as easily as you can in Europe? If that's a case paying their (low) fee and cancelling my monthly RAC membership sounds the best idea...
