Shame it doesn't smell at all, it looked like nice aged ambergris to me. You would've been able to buy a nice new bike if it was.

Can you get a decent in focus shot of it?

That sounds very much like ambergris. Has anyone else smelt it? some people should have an intense dislike of it, others will find it earthy or musky.

Get it checked out because it really could be worth something.

<edit> Here's a decent pic and a recentish find (the colour varies wildly)... https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/dog-walker-finds-lump-of-whale-1564302

That pic makes it look a but harder and rocky than the first one. A good test you can do is to see whether it floats...

I thought it was illegal to sell ambergris as the sperm whale is a protected species?

Nope, Ambergris is something the whale doesn't want.

It looks like a mudstone which is a fine grained sandstone and a sedimentary rock. You get concretions which can have a similar sort of shape to that.

That's my best Internet guess without actually laying hands on the rock itself.

I'd try heating a small crumb of it.

Mudstone etc won't melt in boiling water, ambergris will.

1. Heat a needle and touch briefly to the surface of the item

2. If ambergris, the surface will melt instantly; turning to an oily, molten black residue and a small puff of musky smelling smoke will be emitted.
