hey all, new (ish) to this forum so apologies if this is in the wrong place. this is pretty much as the title says, i posted a long and detailed thread on a different forum years ago, its been such a drawn out project that the forum no longer exists . so its just for me to quickly recap whats been done, what needs doing before its back on the road and give myself a kick up the rse , and also a little advice needed from everyone on how i should paint the tank and undertray ,
here's a few pics from the start (as it was the water pump that failed it was a strip down that iv got way to anal with )
first the bike was completely stripped and the water pump replaced, i also re ground the valves and replaced the head gasket as it was down on compression, blasted and powder coated the wheels and rear swing arm, stripped all the electrics out and cleaned up the frame and suspension. the brakes were pretty good so i just too the calipers off and gave a good clean off the bike,

putting the engine back in and electrics, wheels and swingarm re powder coated at this stage

few more bits on,, headlight, headlight bracket re painted, wiring partially sorted, seat and tank loosley placed on so i can push it around and pretend its finished

after an absolute mare with the exup, the exhaust was on and the rad and all the gubbings were cleaned and re fitted, new pads front and back, calipers re fitted and brakes bled

spent some time in the house (dont ask how i got away with that, i still dont know to this day lol), while it was it had a new chain and sprockets a very good second hand rear set, a pair of leavers and i cut the standard can down (highly recommended, looks and sounds great and not over the top noise wise )

nearly there now
fairings on now, all the electrics sorted and the engine running like new,

no doubt iv missed loads but now its time to paint the tank and im split on what to do with it, i could do it black or try something like this but white instead of yellow

will have to point out that these are just cheep jap fairings so this wont be for more than a few years (fingers crossed),
hopefully it will eventually be back as it was but with a matching belly pan

Hi Chris.Good to see a 4XV R1 being kept on the road.
When you mention an old R1 forum, did you mean yamahar1.co.uk?This has now been replaced by www.yamahar.co.uk
As for the belly pan colour,I think that it looks good in white. ____________________ Just talk bikes. What else is there?

you based anywhere near london as id rather take my R1 for you to work on and give you my cash instead of the shops as anyone who can do what you've just done is in my book more than qualified to work on my bike! |
haha cheers buddy, i'm in leicester at the min as iv just been discharged from the forces and im living with my parents until i get sorted, i'm a mechanic by trade but working at sports direct atm
as for spare parts, iv got a spare bellypan in black and a sports undertray for a 2000 r1 in white and that's about it, unfortunately no indercators jd,
on another note, as anyone here had experience bleeding the front brakes out. i cant seem to get a really firm leaver, iv been using a pressure bleed kit, i'm starting to think the seals in the master cylinder have gone , any tips? ____________________ bike history.. | Fizzer Thou wrote: | The brakes on the R1 have been known to be difficult to bleed, but I have not had any problems on the front of my R1,mainly as it has a bleed nipple on the Brembo master cylinder. And I think that that is the main problem area - air getting trapped at the top end of the system.
The way that I found is best is to push the lever in only small amounts and when you see small bubbles at the reservoir then you know that it is trapped air.Place something under the back wheel or find a way of being able to lean the bike over far enough so that the master cylinder points downwards.Turn the bars all of the way to the left. Then depress the lever only small amounts.Keep the reservoir topped up.When you see no further air bubbles, bleed in the normal way.Hope this works okay for you. |
ahh cheers, i was trying to bleed it out just on the paddock stand, think i might try it with the master cylinder unbolted so i can mess around with it at different angles, thinking about it the pressure bleed kit may not have been allowing the air to get back up and out the top, its on hold now until Wednesday and fingers crossed it'll be mot'd on Thursday ____________________ bike history..
