Buying a bike and SORNing it straight away?

Is there a way of doing this?

I'm hopefully collecting my new bike tomorrow, however I need to fit restrictors before I can ride it, but I also need to be using my current bike to get to work and having just under a year's no claims bonus it doesn't make sense to insure both bikes at once, rather swap the bikes on the insurance and get the NCB discount at renewal (be about £200 cheaper!)

So my plan is to SORN the new bike until I've restricted it but not sure if I can do this with just the new keeper slip.

I'm sure someone on here will have bought a bike and immediately taken it to bits to re-build something?

Just don't want to get messed about by the DVLA for no insurance on a bike that's sat in my garden while I sort it (probably take a week or so after I've ordered the kit)

I bought a Vespa PX125 and immediately SORNed it. I would imagine quite a few people do this who are just going to keep the bike/vehicle as a reserve or if they're going to tart it up.

But I think you have to wait till you get the V5 before you can do it - you need to be registered keeper at DVLA to SORN.

You have a few options, but the easiest is to get the old owner to sorn it for you. Or, you can wait until you get the V5C, then sorn it yourself. Or, you can fill in a V62, and a V890, but this might cost you £25 and/or get the old owner into hassle.

Just wait for the V5, don't be a bastard and V62 form it. Some poor cunt will send off the V5 and you'll get him arse raped by DVLA.

How will you get messed around for no insurance if your name is not on the V5 yet?

I think there is some sort of short grace period after buying or selling a bike, but don't quote me on that.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Basically, you can't sorn it till it arrives.

Sorn is reset once owner/document reference changes.

It will change about 2 weeks after you SORN originally. So just leave it till the V5 comes in, go online and SORN it there. You need reg and the document reference from the V5.

Yup, this is a blatant flaw with SORN. You're technically a smooth criminal the moment the registration changes over to you and the SORN is cancelled, because you can't re-SORN until you know that the keeper has changed.

But surely (surely!) even the DVLA can't be petty and ignorant enough to make an issue of it, and will give several week's grace.
