Hi all

I'm interested in getting a set of scrubbed tyres for the Duc.

At the moment they are mix matched tyres (giving me no problems) but I've always wanted a good set of tyres on there to appreciate the bike a bit more as there will be a bit of difference between a sport touring tyre to a tyre like a pirelli diablo supercorsa.

I'm not sure what to be looking for when buying a set though.

I'm no pro, have done 3 track days all in novice group, but these tyres would be for the road anyway.

What makes the riders sell a set of tyres after 20 laps or a trackday or two? For the tyres to then be good for someone else to buy them?

I know I can't push the Duc to the limit of it's capabilities so am assuming a set of scrubs I wouldn't notice if they were 1 trackday old or 5!

Just interested in what to look for and a general knowledge of them before I go buying a set?

120/70 17
180/55 17 (will a 180/60 17 fit?)

i used to buy new tyres everytime, then i took a punt on a scrubbed set of supercorsas off ebay for about £60, so nearly the third of the price of a new set. I have found them to be just as grippy, if not more so than the pirelli diablos i used to buy and best of all there already scrubbed in so no faffing around getting all that horrible release agent off that you get on new tyres. Track tyres tend to have more wear on the sides and nearly full tread depth in the centres so when they wear out during road riding they tend to wear till there equally worn all round which= zero wastage.

I suppose the only downside is they do wear out pretty quickly with them being so soft but the cheaper price more than balances this out.

Dont think i will ever buy new tyres again now

A tyre that's done 20 laps versus one that's fresh might be .1 of a second down over a lap.
Add up an extra 20 laps where that's getting worse and you could now be in fourth place rather than first place.

For a track day or road use, that's 0.1s isn't going to be an issue. For championship points it could make a massive difference.

Look for buying them from someone with a big budget, so won't have used them as much Smile.

When I was a bit tight for pennies I ran a scrubbed front supercorsa on my CBR, it was a little over size (120 instead of 110 IIRC). I can't say I noticed any difference other than dropping in a little quicker because of the shape of the tyre. For the road I would stick with the high end sports touring tyres in the knowledge that I will never need more grip than they can offer and that they will last a hell of a lot longer and grip better in the wet, I rode the CBR quite hard and still got 10,000 miles from the rear and something like 14,000 from the front.

Just my two pennies.

If you can squeeze a 190 on the back you will have a lot more choice.

Have a look here, you can pick up a set of RaceTec for £85

Love part worn tyres, saves me a bomb when the current ones are bald, allows me to save up for a decent set when summer comes around.

I often found the rear would wear out, but on the road where I'm not braking hard in to corners etc, the front would often heat-cycle out before it would wear out.
A bit after the rear had worn out, the grip on the front would go, despite their being tread left.

They're alright for weekend warriors and trackdays but i wouldnt use them on my everyday ride or you'll be changing tyres every week or two. Sport touring rubber lasts for many 1000's of miles and is easily good enough for knee downs and good grip in the wet. scrubs will only last for a few 100 miles and be shit in the wet.

Depends which ones.
On the same bike in the same slippery conditions with cold tyres (under a mile ridden) I've tested supercorsas with a couple of sports touring tyres and the supercorsas had better grip.

Remember tread makes relatively little difference to wet weather ability in that sort of situation - you're quite unlikely to aquaplane a motorbike unless you're really trying.

As for milage - I'd be expecting a thousand or two of daily use, not a few hundred.

Thanks for all the advice Karma

Got more of an understanding on them now.

The Duc only saw about 2k miles last year Embarassed so tyres will last a while Razz

Will have to consider the options now, thanks Thumbs Up
