I noticed this:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-21630828

How can the bankers justify refusing a loan to a business with a 15year record of profits for a van which will increase profits further when they're all on the take?

Beyond laughable. Neutral

Because past profits are not an indication of future performance.

It also worryingly does not mention what his profits are or his GP%

His 'quiet profits' could be tiny. Or his GP extremely low. I pulled the plug on my own business when GP got under a certain amount.

Secondly it says he doesn't have enough collateral.

What you're advocating is a return to the bad days of 01 to 09 where anybody who could fog up a mirror would be offered a ton of loans.

Thirdly banks don't need to loan money. The BoE will simply print as much money as they want under the FfL scheme, which they can use to gamble on the stock market. If they win trebles all round. If they lose the BoE prints more money to make up the losses.

The fact he can't stump up £17K for a 'profitable' company rings alarm bells for me. Even a mate who ran a Kebab shop had £10K in reserve if any of his equipment broke down. I used to keep a considerable reserve to pay for equipment repairs and to pay off suppliers. So maybe his company isn't all that profitable after all.

Meh they can refuse to lend money to anyone they want the same way I can

The guy then went and bought it without a loan, so maybe he didn't need one after all, or maybe it encouraged him to work harder, earn more and buy it himself

You can't both hate banks and want them to give you their money, pick a side

It's non-existent money they don't actually even have due to fractional reserve banking their cash, they can lend it out how they see fit.

I'm probs going to be lending 200 to a mate so she can buy stock to start he business. Before I give her the cash I'll be looking through her business plan, confirmed orders etc. If I don't think her plan is sound - I won't finance her. My cash plays gets loaned out to my standards, not what the debtor thinks is profitable or not.

I see. And, like the banks, did politicians decide to gift you this £200 on behalf of the taxpayer?

Don't be silly.

The UK does not operate a fractional reserve system.

We operate a more fraudulent system, which does not adhere to Basel III reserve requirements. I.e. there doesn't have to be ANY reserves at all. So £0 of deposits can loan out millions.

It is if you have no intention of paying it back.

What I'm getting at is, is it OK for banks to take money they were given for the express purpose of allowing them to lend and then sit on it? No-one is given a student loan with the intention of propping up the economy through lending it out.

Yes they are.

Student loans are just an advanced form of fraud.

Although the spending and moving money around props up the economy. and the interest rate which is userous.

This isn't the important part of student loans.

The goal of student loans is that they cannot be defaulted on EVER. Unlike mortgages and credit card debt.

It is the leverage which they can put against those loans. Same model sofa companies use which is why they can offer buy now pay 2018.

On mortgages you can go bankrupt which topples the jenga style tower.

Student loans you can't so they can make even more loans on these loans, and make more loans on those loans and more loans on those loans. Because it is impossible to default the jenga tower can only collaspe if you run out of suckers to take on loans.

Can't default, but it is written off after 25 years...

Plus you don't pay unless you earn over x amount.

Not real debt imo, altho future inflation could see the 15k repayment threshold actually being very low.

No they aren't! Are you telling me people are being given student loans IN ORDER THAT THOSE STUDENTS MIGHT USE IT TO LEND?

That was never on any of the forms when I got mine - I used mine to buy baked beans, not to set up a loan shark venture. Mind you, that was a long time ago.

It students need to live sure, they do this by purchasing good which is spending money in the economy. Mostly I agree with the lord though that we are not meant to be lending it out.

Looking at the amount of shitty adverts pandering to students and trying to lure them in with discounts - I'd estimate a reasonable amount of businesses are trying to cash in on student money. Regardless of the intent, in practice the govt creates a load of cash and gives it to young, frolicking careless spenders. That must have some kind of effect on the consumer economy.

Conversely, I'm a tight fuck and spend the bare minimum day-to-day in order to go to festivals and holidays abroad all year.

Come on, it's a PR stunt. Mervyn is out of a job soon remember.

Oh, and if the chap has £7k deposit - that gets a very nice van, he doesn't need a brand new one!

There is never enough information in these articles to form a reasonable opinion!

this is why when I decided to set up a company I raised the money myself
and not bother with the banks and there hoops and I also have no debt to service
these days if I don't have the money I save it till I have enough for what I want

and now after an initial slow start we are starting to pick up work
and any profit is put right back into the business
rather than a bankers bonus
I'm investing in equipment not trying to acquire savings at least I have physical assets that can generate cash
not money sitting in a bank making nothing and a slim chance of loosing it if we get into the shit like Cyprus did and the government Germans decide to help themself to 40% or more

part of me was thinking that too. just had a look on ebay at what sort of van 7k would get you.
without much searching, just ford transit, buy it now between 5-7k
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-TRANSIT-350-MWB-high-roof-RWD-diesel-van-2008-58-57k-miles-/300888047842?pt=UK_Commercial_Trucks&hash=item460e5340e2

only saying again what was said above, if he runs a profitable business but couldn't afford the 17k outright then i wouldn't be too surprised a bank wouldn't loan him the money. presumably he didnt want to or couldn't secure the loan against anything of his own.

You do realise it is not only banks that offer bonuses and incentives. 90% of private sector businesses will be offering bonus schemes somewhere in their structure to ensure growth.

As for the BBC article. It does state that he only generated "modest" profits. What is modest? £1k on a £100k turnover? £100k on £1m turnover?

Profit is only one aspect of assessing how solvent and successful a business is. It doesn't state whether he already had any existing debts within the business, whether he owned the land his business is on - which from the sounds of it he doesn't as BOS said he didn't have any fixed assets to back up any potential failure of the loan.

Most importantly, it doesn't state what cashflow was like, my experience over the past year dealing with businesses of various sizes is that when shit really starts to hit the fan, the businesses can still be making profit, but unfortunately they are starting to feed hand to mouth. This has a domino effect throughout supply chain businesses as people are waiting longer for their customers to pay bills.

Low fixed assets ---> low cashflow = not a particularly investable business.

What the BBC have done is lowered themselves to lazy journalism and pandering to the lowest common denominator of business which is apparently profit = success.

Why not? Look how many people now use payday loan companies - I doubt many these people like them very much.

People who can't manage their finances very well.
I can but judge everyone by the same standards I judge myself, and I haven't used one of those companies or ever borrowed money, i've yet to even use my overdraft!

Don't spend what you don't have.

A naïve view of credit. Used well it is nice to have. I bought my wife a car using a 22 month interest free credit card and this month will be the last payment I make to clear the debt. The interest kicks in during August.

I suspect you haven't had responsibilities in life yet that have led you to using any form of credit, are you still living at home?
