Dunno what you can do with leathers cos I don't own any (hang 'em outside for a bit maybe?), but here's a tip for textile-wearers (it also works for trainers).

Wrap them tightly in a plastic bag, then put them in the freezer overnight. Take them out the next day & allow them to dry naturally - outside is best but just on a hanger in the house will do.

The cold destroys all the bacteria you see, and it's those that make the smell.

If you've got lining in your bike clothing, this tends to absorb all the sweat and other nasty gunk which your body exudes. You can wash the (removable) lining on a 30 centigrade delicate cycle making sure you don't use fabric softener, bleach, tumble dryer, dry cleaner etc etc.

You can probably get away with 'washing' the main textile outer layer with a (nail)brush and some water to be honest. It gets enough crap off for it not to be noticeable and they shouldn't really smell anyway.

As I've a naked bike I've noticed the fronts of my trousers and boots get caked in road grime if I ride in the wet. I just scrub the trousers down with a nailbrush and water, and use a rough cloth to buff most of the crap off the boots, before applying liberal amounts of Kiwi wax polish. Works for me.

Hmmmm, I dont seam to suffer from this problem. Both my leathers and textiles have been used a lot this yesr and neather have any wiff of socks.
Both sets are stored in the kitchen on the back of a chair (much to the anoyance of my 'rents) i dont use any cleaning products or anything like that. Dont know what i do to stop them smelling but it works!

Hi all, my previous texiles i had for a couple of years and had no wiffy probs with them(shame i gave them away to a poor biker mate)anyway i think the smell comes not from the inner lining but the waterproof seal inside the jacket some kind of rubber time to invest in some leathers (me thinks) thanks for your replies and suggestions Smile Thumbs Up

Believe me, try wearing the thermal linings in your textiles on a blazing hot summers day and then say it's not the linings which stink. If I get enough gear on to keep me warm in temperatures of no warmer than 5 celcius ambient, (-11 C with windchill at 50mph apparently), and spend a reasonable time walking around in them, I'll start sweating. And that's in winter.

Are you sure that your not mistaking you crusty old socks for textiles? (hence the smell). If you wear them long enough the material would become similarand maybe be even offer more protection.

It is important not to use any detergent though. Get washing up liquid on your waterproofs and they will leak like a sieve.

All the best

I humbly apologise to the crust on your socks, they are doing a fine job of holding them together. I must say how amazed I am at their reading skills.
