I work for the council. Once my ( 3 tiers up ) boss had his friend carry out repairs for the council. Now my ( 2 tiers up ) boss has had her husband in for two days, also carrying out repairs for the council.

We've just taken delivery of a new ride on mower. It's much too big, completely wrong for the grass cutting route, but is the biggest and most expensive machine (est £40k) we've ever seen. It will be useless... no one asked us what we needed, this just turned up.

We've taken delivery of two other machines as well, brand new... apart from the fact they've been sitting unused at the back of a shed in another part of the county for 3 years.

Ah yeah... and the gang mowers that were bought for touching £30k, only they were incompatible with our vehicles. If they are to be used, a tractor will be needed to pull them... only there isn't a tractor for that job. So the gang mower sat for four years with the distributor and now it is sitting in our shed, taking up room.

All the equipment bought from the same distributor.

It won't be the last time that I opine that any corruption in Westminster pales to that in local government.

My outfit is allegedly hand-in-paw with the local property baron, who is of course acknowledged to be a 100% legitimate businessman, if you know what's good for you.

The only surprising thing about this story breaking is that it saw the light of day.

My cousin worked for a London council, she pretty much saw everybody on the take. She was pretty stupid and blew the whistle. They turned on her emasse and blamed her for a load of unsubstantiated things, and kept on fiddling.

She no longer works in the UK.

Which outlines the corruption and the fact that they cover it up and get the police to threaten anybody who rocks the boat, while preventing anybody at public council meetings the ability to speak out.

Its odd as British people we say the middle east is corrupt because of Bak sheesh, yet our councils could show them a thing or two about corruption.

Ironic that there was universal condemnation of Greek civil servants, when as shown above it is as prevalent in UK local/national government.

My wife works in the NHS, some of stories of wastage and wasted resources really makes me bang my head against the wall. Some people who have only worked for the state wouldn't live for 10 minutes in private sector.

For my company I complained about the ever increasing service charges for the business estate. They pay over £10k per year to maintain the CCTV which is 4 (yes four) cameras and this is just to make sure they work, not to monitor them. In fact, we pay for the electricity of them as the DVR is in our premises!

They also charge several hundred pounds to get an incident (copy of footage) off them, to give to the police!

It's beyond a joke.

My parents run a company and were offered a "special deal" by a county council dept which effectively came down to screwing the taxpayer out of a sweet sum on a yearly basis. They refused on principle.

I worked for an 'establishment' that odered several tons of assorted colours emulsion paint......that night they left it out in a secure yard....temperature dropped below freezing.....paint froze and curdled....lorry came the day after and took it all to the tip.

Corruption in the private sector you say?

Plenty of that going on at my workplace.

One of the *directors is an utter scumbag. He had his 17 y/o son do the company website. 4 pages of general info. £3000 plus £150 per month for " maintenance."

And the time 20 Ipads were ordered but only one is still on the premises, the rest have disappeared.

Excess materials/tools are always ordered in for every job but they soon disappear once the job is done.

There's lots of other stuff which goes on regarding company cars, mobile phones and company credit cards but nothing gets said.

If anything goes wrong re the building ie. plumbing/electrics etc he gets his mates in who charge ridiculous amounts but again nothing gets said.

Someone I know well does a casual job for the council (more casual than the full time, permanent jobs they give out at the council - I know, I know, that's not possible right).

Did her mileage claim the first time round and the section leader sent it back to her and said 'that's not the way we do it'; she'd said she'd gone from home to office, then to site one, then to site two, then home. Whereas in the council, they always go from home to site one, then office, then site two, then office, then home - to maximise the mileage claim.

She was told to 'claim properly' or don't claim at all, as it'll fuck up everyone else's scam.
