...a court summons Shocked

For a bike accident i witnessed back in September.
I have already given a statement to a bloke that came to my house to write it down for me. Im not wanting to sound wet, but i really don't want to go to court. The idea scares me Sad
Also, attached to the court letter is a cheque for £50, which i can really do with atm, but im still not sure i want to go. I know i should for the bikers sake, but im really not.comfortable in a 'civilized' environment! lol
Help!

All part of life's rich tapestry!
Go to the court, look at it as an experience, do your bit for the biker!

As above, do your bit for the biker. Even if you don't enjoy the day in court, you'll be able to sleep well knowing that you did the right thing for someone in need.

Would you want a witness to a bike accident that involved you to bitch out and leave you high n dry?

No.

So get a shirt on, get to court, help the bloke out.

Thumbs Up

So you can talk the talk, but not walk the walk.

Either send the cheque back and decline to attend (thereby negating your witness statement in terms of evidence)

OR

Bank the cheque and find the balls to show up and stick up for your fellow biker's case.

If it was the other way round you'd want him to turn up for you wouldn't you? It takes effort to be a nice guy i'm afraid but i'm sure it'll come back round one day.

Help!

You're only attending as a witness, ya wimp.
Wait until you have to appear as ''The Accused''......Now that can be scary.

Did Jury service last year. Read some magazines the legal bods had from legal bods around the world. Although I disagree with CPS often, our legal system is truly fantastic compared to the rest of the world. I was left with the feeling that when you are asked to do your civil duty, you should do it. Without people stepping up to help our justice system, justice cannot be done on any level. People that should go down for decent stretches get 'let off' or have reduced sentences due to lack of evidence, evidence which you will be giving.

What will it involve? If you have to stand there in front of a jury and do a little talk about what you saw, then yeah I'd 100% hate that too. Everyone is different. If it is that case that you'll have to stand up like that, and that's what you're afraid of, just tell them. They'll have ways around it. All they want is for you to testify to the truth. It could be video linked or something. I dunno. I'm just trying to second-guess what you're actually afraid of. If it is the part where you might have to be in a really open exposed place in front of everyone, then I understand a bit. Although, once it's over, it's over.

Get a criminal record, does wonders for never being called up for jury service.

Go and help someone out, far too many people in todays world just turn a blind eye to stuff because its easier for them. Once you have done it you will feel better for it. Karma

Don't worry, everyone will do their best to make it as easy as possible. It won't be as stressful as you imagine, and I think you'll enjoy helping out a fellow motorcyclist (and human being) in need.

If you don't, you'll never be able to come back on this forum again.

So you could avoid situations and get worse and worse about being a 'not people person' or you could do a deed that'll help out the guy who had the accident and probably do you some good too...

+1

Make yourself do it mate. You need to help out the fellow biker in this situation Thumbs Up

I was called for jury service and did it last week and the week before. The witnesses were treated with the upmost respect and it wasn't daunting for them at all. Put yourself out there mate.

Mate, I had anxiety. If I was around people that weren't close family or friends I'd get an attack.

It got to the point where I didn't want to go out because I always had an attack.

I forced myself to go out knowing it isn't just going to fix itself. Guess what? I'm pretty much cured, I just have the odd attack if I'm tired and have something like a job interview Laughing

TL:DR? Get out there and get over it!

Hmmm. I personally would be worried about that too. I'm not saying it's gonna happen, I'm just saying that we're both similar in that respect. It's a lame social phobia - fear of being in the spotlight, etc etc. I totally get you. But it's just a baseless worry. I bet you'll be imagining every single possible worst-case outcome of it. In reality you'll just trot in, go through the motions, and it'll be over.

Just remember that there will be a very well researched and understood process for this kind of thing. There's a vast section of psychological research where people have considered the best way to make court decisions neutral and fair. One of these factors will be that witnesses shouldn't be pressured or distressed in such a situation, because this could bias or invalidate a decision. So just go there and go with it. It's been done hundreds of thousands of times before, and they'll do everything to make it easy, because that's how it must be for a a fair verdict to be made.

To make things better, just give them a call and tell them. That alone will put your mind at rest.

Believe me, they won't want you to be quaking in your boots and shitting your pants for it. They'll have many ways to make it bearable. But anyway it really probably is quite fine anyway.

Thumbs Up
