PostPosted: 20:15 - 14 Apr 2013    Post subject: Bobber Monkey Bike Reply with quote

I know a few people on here get a kick out of Monkey Bikes, so I've copied this over from the MonkeyRun forum. Will update both as I make more progress. Enjoy!

This project has been going far too long, but finally, after what must now be years of toying with different ideas, getting stuck and frustrated and generally being a lazy arse. We finally have some conclusion.

For years I've wanted to build a hot rod inspired bike and while I still have a few tweaks to make, I've finally got this thing on the road and hope to make some good runs out this year.

I've still got a list of things I want to do slowly over the next few months such as:
Find some bobber style mirrors,
Get hold of a lens eyebrow,
Get the mudguards and headlight satin black,
Get some more pinstriping on the bike.

However for now, it's time for some photo whoring.

So, the first day of ownership

This morning

I ordered a new pinstripe graphic for the front mudguard this morning

and I've just scoped out this as a rear brake light, once it's tinted red of course.

https://i.ebayimg.com/t/REAR-LIGHT-3D-Skull-Custom-Motorbike-Lights-Stop-Tail-/00/s/MTg5WDM2MA==/$(KGrHqZ,!l4E5YCnh5JPBOfb-H45fw~~60_12.JPG

I'm still unsure about maybe heat wrapping the exhaust but I think it may ruin the look a little bit and I'm after some better looking foot pegs.

Obviously not as tricked out as other's bikes on here but I'm pretty pleased with it so far!

Exhaust wrap would look awesome. Do it.

The exhaust is a Takegawa standard look model they used to sell at MonkeyBike UK (now Shire Bikes). It look's deceptively stock, but sounds like a beast, was pretty pricey back in the day. Clicky

Engines had some tuning too, done professionally. Running a kitaco carb, etc. Usual mods really.

Each to their own but do you not feel like a bellend riding them? Probably fun as fuck don't get me wrong!

p.s. That monkeybike is the best I have seen, period. Granted I've only seen a few but it's the only monkeybike I personally like, I'm a sucker for pinstripe paintwork Thumbs Up

You don't get nods Laughing

I love the things! Sometimes you get idiot remarks but 99% of the time people love you for it. They handle shit but it's fun and going 55 is scary. There is something about them though that I don't think you get unless you ride one and to be honest, half the time I don't really think about the size of it.

Leaving it parked up always fills me with paranoia. Seeing as it could easily be picked up.

They are hilarious, heres my old ones, give you a few ideas..

just be careful, on the monkeys the rear hub has a tendency to come loose from the rim (rims unbolt off the hub, and you split them to change the tyres!) so keep an eye on it.

Is there anyone 6 foot tall and above that can actually ride one of these? I can imagine that I could get on it fine and only just bend ma legs to get on the pegs but changing gear/braking with the back brake must be a pain in the hoop!

Yes, they are small but amazing little things.

Rode my Masai DB125H around in full gear for the lulz a few years ago before it was stolen. Fun and games were had.

I'm 6.1ft. Laughing
They are easily rideable at that height, the monkeybikes are the most comfortable. However, the pitbikes handle much better (thinner/taller wheels). Smile

I can definitely see the pro's to having one (or more Razz)

I just actually remembered when I done my work experience at Arnold Clark valeting cars, the vales had got a wee monkey bike to put in the boot to get back to work when they had to deliver cars to customers doors, practical as well as fun!

Need to get a new numberplate sorted, as the current one has holes where the old L-Plates were attached. Plus the exhaust has melted a nice hole Laughing

Not sure if I should get one of these metal ones.

https://www.pl8s.co.uk/images/mediumplates/reflective%20pressed%20motorcycle.jpg

Or just a standard plate with a red border and a slogan. Anyone got any ideas??

Still looking for some mirrors. Seen these but they may look a bit faggish harley Laughing

Apparently the pinstriping has been dispatched so should be able to get that done this weekend.

Is the dirtbike type ones not called pit bikes? Or are pit bikes a kind of monkeybike?

They are pitbikes indeed, but lets face it, they are practically the same thing.

Not got much done this week as I'm still awaiting this pinstriping for the front mudguard. Hopefully if it comes, next weekends job shall be spraying the guard matt black and putting on the pinstripe. Should look a bit more 'bobber' then.

Anyway, todays small job:

NEW PEGS!!!!! (sorry it's not very exciting)

https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/601776_10151359495142121_993301852_n.jpg

Have to say though, I think these look pretty good for the money. You don't get much clearance between the peg and gear selector though. Might need to rectify that, but I've tested it and it doesn't seem to be a problem at the moment.

Forgot to include one last time but here is an arse shot. Love the way it looks with the low bars, makes for a really nice profile in my opinion. Could do with a new numberplate though, as this ones a little bit shot. Drilled holes, scratches etc.

I'd love one with a backrest, highway pegs and ape hangers Smile
