 |
|
Finally my insurance quotes are reasonable and a proper sports bike is a realistic option for me, problem is, the difference insurance wise between a 600 and a 1000 is less than £100.... so now im looking at allsorts!
The next bike i buy will be a long termer, so i want it to be something i will still love in 3/4 years time! Kinda ruling 600s out based on getting bored of it in that period and constantly wanting more.
Gsxr 750 appeals to me, as do ZX7R, And gixxer thou's,R1's etc. But will a thou be too much bike this early on in my riding career, or will i be fine with a bit of self restraint ( which i do have! honest!) ?
A bit about me....
Ok so i learnt to ride a couple years ago, had a 125 for a couple months, then did my DAS and got an SV650S. Soon got bored of that so replaced it with a Thundercat, which was then traded for an FZ6, and finally i traded up to an Sv1000SZ a couple months ago.
I would class myself as a "good" rider. I ride with my brain and not just my ego, i can be a bit hamfisted at times, but sometimes i can also be a bit too cautious. Im not amazingly fast through the twisties, but im getting better with every ride as my confidence grows. I do not have a deathwish, and nor do i want to do 150+mph at every given opportunity, but I do intend to start doing trackdays this year also...
So what ya reckon? am i gonna die if i get the super kitten killer?!
Let the flaming begin! ____________________ Current: 99 Yamaha Thuundercat

Get a Gixxer thou, remove 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gears from the case.
Does 100mph in first all you need.

Trackdays, a decent 600 rider, or even an average will outpace a shit 1000cc rider.
For the road, its a lot of power but I'd have one. GSXR1000 K6 |

I find litre sports bikes (and twins) pretty boring - not enough interaction required to go silly-fast.
However, it was a stage I had to 'go through' - owning one to work this out.
When I got the GSXR1000 it was with the understanding it was as a boring easy to ride bike; which it does excellently.
Most people think they are 'good' riders by their own definitions .
It sounds like you'll probably not kill yourself with one. A good chunk more power than a SV1000, but not that massive - taller geared too.
Brakes and handling more inviting. |

Not saying there's anything wrong with it, but you have had quite a few bikes in just two years. If you had stuck with your first bike, in two years you would have been pretty confident in throwing a 650 round a bend or two, but you upgraded, probably before you had mastered the bike. But hell...

^^^ This, get what you want, you're going to anyway. You just want everyone to agree and say get it.

100% correct, but inevitably when you can buy something better, you do! lol ____________________ Current: 99 Yamaha Thuundercat

As I said, nothing wrong with that. I've been riding three odd years and I've got three bikes. Difference is that I still ride my original one daily.
But then, you already know the answer to your question don't you Two reasons for posting the question;
1) You think you really shouldn't, but you want everyone to tell you it'll be alright
2) You want to show off
You already know what answers you'll get on this forum;
1) Buy what you want, I did and I'm alive
2) You should move up slowly as your capability rises. Buy it and you'll probably kill yourself
And, two results;
1) You'll buy what you want to buy and you'll be fine
2) You'll buy what you want to buy and you'll crash and die
So, do what you want to do, and buy the bloody thing. Just make sure you post some pictures up when you do ____________________ Honda Goldwing GL 1000 Current love

In answer to your question in the title, for a fairly new rider, yes.
You need to ask yourself why you are getting bored so quickly and are wanting more, even though you don't want to do 150 everywhere.
My guess is that you're not riding your current bike to its full potential, so want something more powerful to make up for lack of skill/experience.
A 600 super sports will outpace all the bikes you have had/own. Take that to the track, learn how to handle a bike at speed, then move up if you still want more.
As people have already mentioned, you will still buy one anyway, and are just looking for approval, which I'm afraid you won't get much of here.
Just my 2p. Ride safe. ____________________ Sold: 2003 satin black Yamaha R6

But you could say the same for a c90 - why move up from a c50 when you're not getting the most out of it as it is?
I've happily lapped Snetterton (very long straights) as well as other tracks on a 64hp SV650 with similar times to riders on litre bikes.
(And I was far from 'good' compared to others on a similar bike.)
I don't see that as a reason for the other people I was lapping with to have slower bikes.
To further clarify what Garth says, too:
Anything with over 75hp sucks on the road.

Horses for courses. I find riding the triumph (a bog standard naked roadster that isn't particularly fast) far more entertaining than I ever found the ZX9. Whilst the ZX9 was intoxicating when you wind the throttle open, the novelty of going fast on a machine designed to do exactly that wore off pretty quickly for me. When I took it for a weekend over to Ireland, the journey there was so uncomfortable that had I not fallen off (straight road, freak accident) and broken the bike, I was seriously thinking of getting rid. Like G said, for everyday riding, they're pretty boring. I imagine if I was a "ride like your pants are on fire" kinda guy, or I'd only ridden it every third weekend in august if the sun is out, then the novelty might've remained, but I use my bikes to commute monday to friday year round, to travel weekends away and for trips to the seaside... It was just so meh at everything, and has far too much for normal roads for me to use more than 40% of the potential in it (if that). I almost felt as though the bike was bored with me as much as I was bored with it. The triumph on the other hand never got boring. It always cheered me up... It's like little donkey, full of character and eager to please, a noisy plodder that occasionally forgets itself and does 130mph on a whim.
I'm not sad I had a big supersport (if people still class the zx9 as such). If I hadn't I wouldn't have know that they weren't for me... But now I look at gixxers, R1s, Blades and s1000rrs and I know they're not for me. I look at bikes like enfield bullets, kwak w800s, triumph tiger adventurers and I drool! ____________________ 1977 Honda CG125

Currently have a 98 zx7r (Owned for 3 1/2 years) and a recently purchased 05 zx10r (full akra, pc3, custom map, quickshifter, ohlins damper) and if I'm brutally honest I prefer my old zx7r.
Don't get me wrong, its a absolute machine, it shakes its head all the time which feels great, but as soon as you red line it in any gear your in ban worthy speeds. I can also corner the 7r faster due to it being far more stable and no where near as lairy or twitchy.
Depends what you want though, I had to try a thou, so thought I would go for an iconic one, I'm not sure if I will keep it for the whole summer though.
By no means telling you what to do, but I prefer being able to ride something hard, its much more rewarding. |
