Hi my girlfriend is completely in love with a late 1990's model Honda VTR 1000 Firestorm and I am here to ask you all what your views on them are before we hand over the cash. I have also shown her the Honda VFR 800, Triumph Daytona's, Suzuki TL1000S and a variety of cruisers but she really really wants a YELLOW! Honda VTR 1000 Firestorm, they sound great for a twin and I have noticed they are quite responsive, from an idle speed a quick crack of the throttle makes the engine flare instantaniously! like a 2 stroke 125 dirt bike! the suspension felt errr comfy Confused and the brakes must be of a decent grade for a honda? any information will help and will be much appreciated Very Happy

Yeah, I had a mate that had to ride one for a while as a loaner. Apparently the tank range is truly pitiful - he went to Wales for the weekend and by the sounds of it spent all his time worrying about how far it was to the next petrol station. Apart from that, he seemed happy enough with the bike's performance.

They are good bikes as standard, but to be "decent" they need some work.... braided brake lines, re-valved suspension and new rear shock seems to be the "norm"

An RC51 throttle seems to be a popular mod as it turns it into a quick action throttle.

Otherwise they are good reliable, lazy bikes.... I test rode one a short while ago as it is on my "next bike" list but personally I don't think I can cope with filling up every 80 miles, I have to put up with that with the WR400 and don't fancy my main bike to be the same Confused

But if it's just a toy then it'll be good Thumbs Up

My mate rides one of these and they sound awesome! I sat behind her on a rideout and i felt the ground vibrate Shocked They are awesome bikes and after my hubby had a go on it he loved it. He says they are very smooth and not jerky like a sports bike but the power delivery is much smoother.
If I could reach the floor on it then I would love one Laughing
Red's the best though Wink

cool thats a good start I don't get the "RIDE" magazine hear in Australia and the small tank range shouldn't be a problem she just wants it to sound like a TL1000S with pipes! Razz

Very fun bike, will wheelie for miles Cool

Unless you're planning on using it to commute or something the tank range isn't a problem, the grin factor more than makes up for it. Great bikes, wish mine hadn't been nicked...

Why not just get a TL-S then?

Coz everyone knows Hondas are better. Mr. Green

Plus We've all heard about the frames breaking/other bits falling off on the TL-S. And the "cak" handling etc.

(bike, you mean) oops, didn't check where you were

it says look out for knackered camchain tensioners and unbalanced carbs (or carbies, for an ozzie Smile )

also says later (bigger) tank will fit, if fitted along with later bars (to clear the tank)

They're unbelievably cheap here at the moment, shame about the pitiful fuel consumption Neutral

I reckon both bikes need some sorting for fast road use and trackdays, but there's little wrong with either TBH! Ive ridden a Storm once and found it was a giggle, and the sound is cool too! I wouldnt want to call it, but the Build quality is better on the Honda, but not by that much, and its arguably nicer looking? The TL has a bad boy repuatation and that puts alot of people off, but either bike with a few £££'s spent on suspension work, could be great! The TL seems rare compared to the Storm, so maybe if you want to be different its the one to have? I would say the TLS is a much better bike than the bulbous later TLR though!
