Right ive got a bit bored lately of my bikes and as summer is fast approaching its time to dust off the cobwebs of the speedy 4 and make it a bit more interesting...

If you where gonna spend some pounds on modifying your bike subtly where would u start, this is the speed four as it stands atm...

https://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b196/FowlersRs/79C01EC5-6E71-47F9-BC25-3901B0867233-1140-0000009D89094AFD_zpsdfa13382.jpg

Only real difference is I have the pillion seat cover on now so the back end looks tidier, what else would u look to modify....

Ive thought about the following:

* Different Mirrors, the standard ones are ok but look a bit shit imho..

* Slightly smaller number plate (not small enough to blatantly take the piss)

*Shorty levers for brake and clutch as the standard ones are huuge!

* Possible power commander and rolling road tune - the FI on these is notoriously shit but not sure how much more power I could realistically gain?

* Radiator grille guard?

* Crash bobbins - more trackdays are deffo on the bill this year?!

Anyone else like to comment, what would u change?

Radiator guard. 1st thing bought for any of my bikes. Having to spend silly money on a radiator after someone I was following chucked a stone through it, never without one now.

Just treated her to a new set of BT023's, made so much difference to the handling as the old tyres where squared off pretty badly.

I don't know why, but it seems to be odd having a triumph with in-line four instead of three, I mean why would you buy something that you can have cheaper and quite better from Japan Confused

If triumph, then the in-line three is the only choice Smile

The little things like new levers, adjustable rearsets and different bars etc might make it nicer to ride.

I like Speed fours, but personally I don't think the side fairings and the belly pan do the looks any favours. The small plate would be a little mod, but that and a carbon hugger were the first 2mods I did to my ZX6R, and they were the best mods too!

I wouldn't bother with the PC and dyno set up, unless you change the full system, as I don't think power wise you'd see enough of a gain to be worthwhile otherwise?

I think the triumph ECU's can be chipped anyway, and there were several later versions of the map to make them run better and smoother, which a dealer should be able to install for you.

If I had your Speed four, i'd lose all the extra plastics, and probably fit a Hornet 600 headlamp and either keep the clip ons or fit a set of Renthal MX bars maybe?

It's just my opinion but I don't like the Tri oval design end can, and think a 4-1 upswept megaphone style system like a Vance&hines would look much nicer.

Have you thought about a suspension re-furb/ upgrade and set up session?

Thanks for the feedback mate, I must admit from some angles I agree on the fairings but then other angels it looks great, this particular image doesnt do it much favour..

Suspension setup to myself is something id like to consider, what sort of money would that cost?

Do you have a pic of the can style your talking about?

The Speed 4 is one of the hidden gems of middleweight motorbikes. Built to a standard not a price, yet now cheaper than most contemporary Japanese bikes. Cracking machines.

No need for the power commander they already have a tunable ECU.

Get the suspension serviced and set to your weight, clean out the calipers and fresh fluid. Both made a definite improvement to my D650...

That can, why?

Nothing is worth doing for the sake of it. Worst reason to modify a bike ever.

If you want a better bike, sell it and buy a better bike. If you want a better riding experience with the same bike do the California Superbike school or similar.

What I've meant is that I'd rather get cheaper Japanese in-line four instead of the in-line four triumph. Actually, I'd buy a triumph only because of its in-line three engine. I don't know how reliable triumph is, how does it run, how far am I gonna get on it, I just want something new and a in-line three cylinder engine is quite rare in this country, that's all.

You can get tons of parts for most of the Japanese in-line fours in my country, so it's obviously better choice. Although, I've had 2 motorcycles and both were so rare I had to order parts from abroad and some from Japan, but that's me, I don't like to have an reasonable ordinary motorcycle Cool

Had Daytona 600, was nice, triple is miles better but yeah, rather than have an expensive to insure CBR, I bought a cheap to insure Daytona 6

Then you'd be buying an inferior bike, for it's time the Speed Four is the best spec'd naked 600 out there. It was the lightest the one with the most power and the only one with fully adjustable suspension. It was also voted Ride power surveys BEST handling bike a few years back.

IMO if you are gonna spend money on it these are decent and or cheap ish mods.

Replace the mirror with the later Speed/Street Triple mirrors
Replace the Gear lever with a Daytona 600/650 item, Better looking IMO.
Buy a £10 odb2 vag cable and download this software. that negates the need for a PC3.
Ermax Undertray.
Then spend some money getting the suspension set up for your weight.

Yes, I think it was only the 650 that came with the linkage type shifter and it is much nicer than the 600's, I don't know if you would have to change the rearset but if you do then GBmoto do some adjustable rearsets, might aswell just fit those if you've got about £200 burning a hole.

Well maybe, but I'm no track racer and if a bike has less power or more weight I don't really care and I still think that if triumph then an in-line 3 cylinder one Thumbs Up

I know it sounds horrible, that I say, that power or performance is not everything, but on an open road it is not.

You said you could get a cheap and better il4 from japan, that is not true IMO.

Been looking at these recently but something about the intakes put me off. Looks like they were stuck there as an afterthought and make the bike fugly.

I'd be wanting to remove them and put smaller intake air catchers. Shorten them so they still scoop the air in but they dont look so obtrusive.

But then I know more about quantum physics than I do about bike mods and I know nothing about quantum physics.
