well, as some of you know im back in the uk, via a ski season in france,
before we left new zealand we bought a project camper sight unseen, but knowing we'd have to do a bit of work to the camper part,
the van is based on a 1984 207d with the legendary om616 2.4l diesel motor,

its only got 59000miles on the clock and the cab and chassis is rust free,

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/camper1.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/camper2.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/camper3.jpg

the inside of the cab
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/camper5.jpg

and the back before the strip down
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/camper7.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/camper6.jpg

doesnt look too bad you say.... bollocks,
there has been a leak in one of the skylights and the windows have leaked,
so all the roof timbers were completely rotten, and all the thin ply (3mm) on both sides of the roof timber, and most of the ply on the walls as well,

so the strip down begins,

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1158_zps3c4c2030.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1159_zps8e7c0e05.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1160_zpsb322274a.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1163_zpsf345c0a7.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1164_zps224ad8de.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1165_zps8c8ad2f7.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1167_zpse4bfc5f3.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1168_zps3e039569.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1169_zps21f1459b.jpg

as you can see, its a full strip down,

plan is to replace the timbers in the roof with tanalised timbers, an actual frame on the walls (just insulation on the sides, whole roof is held up by a support on one side and the wardrobe on the other, and the pathetic 3mm ply on the walls) then 6mm ply over the whole lot,
full new electrical system, new bath room, new seating lay out, change to the kitchen set up, etc etc.

will keep up to date as it happens, approx time frame 6 weeks Wink

Had a 307d beaver tail once. Damn that thing was dog slow. I'm talking 50mph max. I hope that's got a little more punch else you will have took 2 weeks off to spend a week away.

Good luck with the project.

id assume the tow truck would have a super low gear ratio to have the torque to haul another car,
mind you top speed is probably 70mph but you wouldnt want to keep that up for any extended time, so 60 is about cruising speed,

not in a huge hurry Very Happy got quite a few months to cruise around europe, speed isn't a priority Wink

well the kitchen in the back is now out,

not much holding it together,

first of the new timber is down, ive used tanalised stuff,

so if it ever does get a leak in the future its not going to just rot away,

also decided to add some vertical timbers, im surprised its still upright,

the only thing that holds the whole thing up is the foam and the alloy outside skin,

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1174Medium_zpse7b9e0d6.jpg

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1172Medium_zps96926200.jpg

and that was yesterday, more of the same today i suspect

Tannelised timber is proper beast.

My dad built a tool shed in the garden from tannelised 3"x4"s clad in shiplap back in the mid 80's. The thing today is absolutely rock solid. It just had a new roof put on last autumn, before that it was all original build. I guess it will probably be there in anothe 15-20 years....

Yes it was, but not now as they changed the formulation of the stuff as it was possibly toxic.
To be honest in an enclosed space like that which you are sleeping in for hours that may be no bad thing, it will still outlast the rest of the vehicle.

A new tanalised garden shed bought now probably won't though.

yeah its certainly not the same recipe these days, it doesnt smell the same any way, but any weather protection has got to be better than the crap kiln dryed shit they originally used in it,

Any asbestos used in the construction? It just reminds me of a typical 70's - 80's house that are full of the stuff. Be careful!

today i dub. "1 step forwad and 3 steps back day"

arghhh, well not much happening, found more rot in the floor, bugger, i was tempted just to cover over it,

but my better nature got the best of me, so up came the rear part of the floor,

even my camera was disapointed and took blurry photos in sympathy Wink

until it saw the beer of the day, Wink

well id lie t say ive been really productive... but that would be lying,

how ever some progress has been made

i laid down the first layer of ply

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1203Medium_zps60d0ecc5.jpg

and started putting the internal frame in pace

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1204Medium_zpsb94439be.jpg

and made and installed what will be the step

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1205Medium_zps7e50c61a.jpg

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1207Medium_zps1ece3aa4.jpg

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1206Medium_zps13d576ca.jpg

the design of the camper in reguardsto the floors is shite, they never even ran timber or steel from the chassis, so when the floor rotted out the whole body of the van dropped as well, about a inch and a half, which was shit, i had to jack the whole body up around the chassis and add a whole lot more timber to hold it there,

any way from underneath

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1208Medium_zps35fbc83f.jpg

next job before i put the top layer of ply and floor insulation down is :

rip of the completly fucked rear fibre glass part of the van,

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1209Medium_zps7e58def0.jpg

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1210Medium_zpsd984429f.jpg

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/merc207d%20camper/SAM_1211Medium_zpse7b437f9.jpg

ill make/get made a new panel to replace that section made from sheet alloy and bent to suit

and beer of the day,

the local "cost cutter" eskbank trading, just down the road has a wicked selection of ales, combine that with dobbies garden centre around the corner, and the paltry range of tescos there is a huge amount of ales, stouts, porters, ipa's etc etc that need to be tryed,

most so far have been great, im a fan of the dark beers, stouts and porters, so i tend to keep an eye out for them

well today was spent ripping out the fucked rear fibre glass panel, reinforcing the floor at the rear, and filling the floor with insulation and then popping the top layer of the floor down,

beers of the day,

lovely root/ginger beer, very creamy Wink

and endish of the day

quite nice coconut to taste that evolves in to a malty stout,

Interesting, got to agree only have the rare one at the moment but so many out there if you can find them that should be tried. Also a change from sticking to the same beverage constantly.

Had one of these earlier whilst watching the match, really nice taste and not bad for £1.49 down at Aldi. If you haven't tried it it's worth a shot.
