John retired personally from competition in 1979 but went on to manage his own racing team and continues to ride successfully at sprint events once or twice a year.

He was looking for a 9 second 1/4 on Shotgun this morning but got a 10.5 as his back wheel kept on letting go and he had to wind the throttle back a couple of times, still went over the line at over 130 though!
