What the actual fook has happened in the last couple of years to used bike prices??

Saw a gpz500 by a seller on here for £1200??? A few years ago a mate picked one up for £250 needing a few things done. Where has the additional grand in value come from??

It would also appear my dropped zx7r (cracks in fairing panels) is still worth pretty much the £1400 I paid for it near 4 yrs ago....

My bro donny bought a cbr600f also 4 years ago and it seems its still worth the same as he paid too...

A guy at work sold a 1996 cbr600f for £1600 for gods sake...

I'm guessing the economy collapsing has contributed to cheap bikes being more desirable, but seriously!

The same that has happened to new bike prices.

New prices go up, so do used bike prices.

However, just because a bike is advertised at a certain price, doesn't necessarily indicate that's a reasonable price, even if someone does pay it.

Normally this time of year prices go up. This year seems somehow worse than usual.

I suspect it's down to a few reasons:

1.) New bike prices have risen astronomically due to the yen etc.

2.) Decent bikes for not much money have been snapped up by polish and eastern european traders due to low supply and higher demand over there, thus reducing supply here

3.) I think people are sick of the current financial circumstances, so instead of holding off until the economy gets better, lots of people are buying bikes now. On the flip side of that, people who are wanting rid want more money.

4.) with the recent introduction of Practical Sportsbikes magazine, and the resurgence in popularity of Classic Motorcycle Mechanics, and various other factors lots of people are becoming more and more interested in older bikes they can work on themselves, without having to have a laptop and a diagnostic cable. Older bikes with carbs that work well are rising in price because of that too.

5.) Ebay. Ebay is so ubiquitous and the audience so wide that bikes on there are overpriced. Similarly but less so with Biketrader, Gumtree and Pistonheads. Personally if I was looking for a cheap bike I'd (ironically perhaps) be looking in the back pages of Classic Motorcycle Mechanics and Practical Sportsbikes which still seem to have some bargains.

The bargains are still out there, it's just they are much harder to find these days.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I've been out of looking at bikes for a few years, and looking on ebay recently it seems that in the sub-3k end of the secondhand market. All the prices have been condensed into the 1000-1500 bracket.

There seems to be hardly any old 200 shitters on ebay anymore, and lots of bikes that used to be in the 300-600 range have all moved up to at least a grand. On the other end of the scale bikes that were about 2000-2500 have been pulled down to 1300-1600 or so.

It's interesting to set the ebay buy-it-now price search to 999-1001 pounds, a really wide selection of bikes all for a grand.

As well as the Elbonians creaming off the bargains, new bike sales have more than halved since 2007. Bikers are getting licensed up faster than we're dying off. 5% inflation for 5 years is 28%. Plus all those great summers we've been havi- dang, I was on a roll there.

I've recently been looking for a cheap bike, sub £1k, and found it really difficult to get something decent without sky high mileage.

A few years ago they were easy to find, got something in the end though.

I found a lot of the cheaper bikes were down south, as soon as you move up here into Yorkshire the prices seem to increase for the same bike.

It's sad times really isn't it!
Good news for folk who've had a decent secondhand middleweight bike sat in their garage for a few years though i guess.

I haven't looked into the secondhand bike market myself for a while, but all the bikes i used to look out for 5-8years ago have shot up in value now. I once turned down a TZR250 for £500 as it was a right mess and had loads of plastic damage and needed alot of cosmetic tidying up. Show me a £500 TZR now!

I had always thought that once your over the artificial 125cc pricing bracket, that £1000 buys you quite alot of secondhand bike, especially if your not fussy about capacity or the exact model.

I know big old bruiser's are not often ready to ride safely without some maintanence and consumables replacing, but i've seen locally bikes like Kawasaki ZX10's or CBR1000F's advertised for £7-800. Spend the same again on getting one into good mechanical shape and sorting out the chassis and suspension, then you've got some serious VFM and alot of machine for your cash.

I don't know what older 600cc sportsbikes are fetching now, but when i sold my J1 ZX6R for around £2k, that was 5years ago, and i suspect they are getting closer to £1200 or less now for the same bike.

You would wish that to be so, but unfortunately it is not the case.

Prices are getting a bit crazy. Looking to buy a cbr600f in at the end of May - by then prices are going to be even higher. I've set aside around £2k but I'm loathe to spend 1600 on a mid nineties shitter.

That's half-decent used car + insurance money for goodness sake.

I may be looking at another year on the 125 or maybe even getting a car instead.

I knew the world had gone mad when I saw an RXS100 on ebay for £1995 (it's still on there now, unsurprisingly). Was looking to get a YBR125 as my lightweight commuter to back up the incredibly rickety RXS and couldn't believe the kind of money they're going for now.

Bought a GPZ500 about six years ago for £500, full T&T, new C&S, new battery, new back tyre, generally sound but quite high mileage (65K). Tidy bike though, rode really nice. Wouldn't mind another but as per OP, prices have doubled and more for something well used but still worthwhile.

CB500s have also gone up a hell of a lot too, though they were never the cheapest. Just about every bike ever made and more than 10 years old is being hawked as a classic. Twists my fecking melon.

I almost always buy via word of mouth, not on places like ebay and Gumtree. But even this way, prices are still spiralling.

Even during the winter this year and last, used bike prices were higher than they were a few years ago.

It's only going to get worse. As the prices of newer models don't seem be dropping at all. Some 2008 / 2009 models aren't that far off new prices, and there's nothing decent at all below £1k anymore.

I remember buying my GPZ500 with 24k on the clock for £650 in 2008. There's one with more mileage for sale now on these forums for £1.2k Shocked
