Hi All

I am a photographer from Chester and I spent my day on Saturday 20.04.13 photographing the motorbikes on the A537 Cat & Fiddle Road. I know this road is popular with Bikes because I fly Paragliders on Shining Tor which is just down from the Cat & Fiddle.

I have posted the images to my website:-

https://www.imagecaptured.co.uk/p1061997936

It was great fun watching the bikes fly by.... the speed on the corners was nothing short of impressive!

Never seen myself riding my bike, I'm gutted a photographer has never snapped me! I was near there on Sunday, the C&F is a lot quieter and slower than it used to be.

If you're near Manchester, head up to rivington barn on a sunday - trheres always a photographer there, his website is called "shoot your bike", and he snaps all the pics then puts up on his website for sale. Damn good service/business imo.

Or you could all answer my threads in the North/Midlands/Wales sections when I offer to take photos of people riding bikes for free Wink

You spent a day and took only 16 photos? Not very productive Wink

Lol! I agree! The reason was it took me ages to work out how to best capture the bikes as they go so fast. Plus, I moved around to find the best spot to shoot. I actually took just over 300 photos but chose the 16 as the final selection.

In terms of the download price, I appreciate it appears expensive and in all honestly I didn't know where to pitch the price. From a photographers point of view the camera and lens I used to take these images cost a notch under £3000.00 so that is reflected in the price but also in the quality of the images.

It is always a hard for a photographer to justify thier fee's as photography is always deemed as expensive. All I can do is take superb images and offer them out there. If there is one of you and you like it enough to want to buy it then that would be great. If not no worries but hopefully you enjoy looking at them. As a photographer I get a buzz out of people enjoying the images as much as buying them.

You can't use the "fast" excuse as there is a YZF R125 in there Laughing

Regardless of the camera used, the price is a little expensive given some people happily do this as a hobby and offer them up free (KLR for example)

I suppose it's cheaper than getting a picture from one of these...

I think next time you need to concentrate on getting a lean angle shot towards the exit of the corner, we bikers love to know how far over we get Mr. Green

I had some luck selling trials 'snaps' last year. They were not great, I gave them out free, someone asked if I wanted payment, suggested £2 paypal donations (always got £2 of everyone).

To be honest, if I stood at a cafe taking pictures, I would probably sell good ones at £4/£5 then chuck all the non top quality ones up on Flickr free to download. If you were there all day, you would learn the best spots, and the secound visit you would get far more good shots and far better sales.

Edited to add :

The trials snaps were just that. Snaps. Ixus 75 compact I think. I was just there a lot, got to know everyone, and got OK'ish at taking shots there. Almost none of which translated to skill anywhere other than at trials events, but eh. Had fun. Made me a few bob towards my HS30EXR

How can you legally take a picture of someone then charge them for it? Surely if it is purely a picture of you which you didn't ask for you have the right to it? Laughing

Do you have your models release form completed so you can sell those photos of these people? Wink

No need for a model release as they're not for business use.

No right to privacy in a public place, can be done under harrassment, but you have to ask them to stop first.

The photograph belongs to the photographer, not to the people in it.

You can take pictures of anyone in a public place and then sell those pictures or use them for commercial purposes without any need for model release. A lot of people (particularly coppers and security jobsworths) seem unable to grasp this straightforward fact Laughing

Does my head in hearing stuff like that. If you like cameras and want to spend £3k on a camera and a lens (as I have done in the past) then great, go ahead, it's a fun hobby, have all the toys. Don't then try and blag that you're having to charge so much for a photo because the camera it was taken with cost £3k. I could buy a camera and a lens right now for £500 and get an equivalent photo in terms of resolution, image quality and sharpness - knowledge is much more valuable than the gear you're using.

For the record I've sold plenty of photos in this manner before at mountain bike races but found that people just don't want to spend £20 on a download. I'm not one to tell you how to do this as for all I know you could be a full time pro photographer and this was just a weekend out with the camera and a chance to potentially earn a few quid but I'll say judging by the difficulty I have in giving photos away for free on this forum you won't be retiring early Laughing

Entry level SLR and a kit lens.

Much more if you're going second hand.
