Is it me or is it normal for people from other departments to talk down to you in a rude way just because you are the youngest?

Really pisses me off.

Another thing i am pissed off about is the jobs i am still getting given!
I have passed my IT and telecoms exams and apprenticeship but still being given jobs my mates at college could do.

BCF please advise.

speak up for yourself politely. Are they definately being rude? maybe they have had youngsters who have been cocky and self important in the past so they are just being professionally aloof until they get to know you.

Most newbies start off with the easier stuff until they have proved they are capable of more.

Being young is not a reason to let people step on you. Just don't put up with it. If people are being condescending to you be condescending back, I address people how they address me.

I find being young usually means I'm (almost!) worshipped by the elder ladies (and men, but for some reason the women are the worst for it) who think I'm amazing for knowing things like how to turn a computer on and create a PDF from a word document Rolling Eyes

I'm one of the youngest in my workplace and I'm nearly 30 Shocked I do find the actual youngest person a bit retarded, lacking in common sense and generally annoying though. Not sure that has anything to do with her age, shes just a muppet and always will be Laughing

Seriously though, people shouldn't be talking down to you because of your age. Just talk to them like they're old, deaf and smell of cabbage - they might get the hint Wink

It's a power issue.

Do they need stuff from you, or do you need stuff from them?

It's normal, and don't turn into a little bitch about it unless it is abusive, and then dont be a little bitch unless you have no other way.

I did an apprenticeship in my 20s and the average workman ages was 45-55 so I know where you are coming from. Better coming out of my time, and at 33 I can still pull off looking like mid twenties. After you have proven yourself and stop acting young and foolish then they start to take you more seriously.

I just noticed you also said I.T. And other departments, is that not par for the course in that industry, e.g. The sales and managers treat you like muppets?

Nooooooo, never treat the I.T. folk as muppets or your computer will NEVER work Laughing That's rule number 1! I bring biscuits in for the I.T. department and get on with them rather well. Guess who gets preferential treatment when the problems happen? Wink

Tough one.. I know how that feels. I used to wind people up when they did that to me.

Rolling Eyes "Can you photocopy this?... You know how to photocopy don't you? (/smarm)"

Smile "No, can you show me"

Rolling Eyes "You do this and that and this"

Smile "No still not getting it, could you show me again". Cool

They get the message eventually when I give them a cheeky smile after they have wasted 20mins of their time.

Maybe you have a little boy face? Try growing a beard. Ensure that you always act like a grown up. What would a 40 year old do if spoken to like that? Would he look at them like they're daft? You could affect the same expression when spoken to like that perhaps?

Just don't do what one of the lads i used to play rugby with did - suddenly and really obviously start talking in a really deep voice Laughing

One thing worth bearing in mind is that if people start to complain about you and/or you begin to become a thorn in the boss' side, you may get fired or otherwise forced out of the job, so it's a fine line to draw and sometimes it may be best to just avoid talking to the idiots/hurting their egos too much so they don't drag you down.

Responsibities will come to you when you show you're capable and good at what you're given to do but not cocky. If they don't, maybe you need a change of employer. Do you get reviews/appraisals? Is there a culture at work that allows you to say "i think i can be of more help to you by doing additional/harder tasks" during these meetings?

They can't be all that great.

They should be telling you to do it.

Bloody kids at work. Should be getting a paper round or something like that. Under28s are a pain in the arse. Under 35 I may give them the time of day. Mid 40za're fine. 50 and over need to be put down.

I'm 22 but am one of the two most senior staff at my place. Aside from the owners though noone is over 35.

People respect me 'cause I'm good at it, work hard and always make sure I'm early for shift, am fair and think about things before saying them.

Respect has to be earned, not just when you're young but each time you start a new job. So do the shit jobs with a smile, I've been a senior analyst programmer for thirty years, and am internationally respected in my own rareified field, but I'm still happy to show someone how to scan an email to themselves from the photocopier.

Gain some wider expertise in the business you work for, that always impresses.

Go the extra mile. If you think there's a better way to do something do some research and email your manager with a proposal, he'll probably ignore it but the above salary level effort you put in will be remembered.

Do tell what exams you've passed to justify, err, anything?

I worked in a CTI company for some time.

Often saw people come in with fairly relevant bits of paper, but so often it didn't mean they knew anything.
