Reg/Rec solution?

My 600 cbr suffers from the reg/rec problem - it's gone about 3 times.

Always goes on a long trip, cruising on the motorway at 80 for example.

Friend of mine has a blade engine in a kit car and has fitted a fan near the reg to keep it cool. Might be tight on space to do that.

Should I just run with the side panel off to expose it? But I would think water would not do it any good?

Or cut a hole and stick a vent in the side panel?

Any ideas?

As the guy's say above is the best way.

Have seen methods involving fans from a PC to keep the OE unit cool too.

Might be worth using a bit of heatsink compound between the reg and the frame too - it'll help with heat transfer.

Snorty hit the nail on the head with that link! I had all sorts of issues with my FireBlade's reg/rec. I swapped it with THAT exact unit posted in the ebay link (went for the kit version).

You may have to fashion some sort of mounting bracket, but that, on the grand scheme of things shouldn't be too difficult. MOSFET reg's don't dump the excess current as heat. Had mine in the blade for a year and a half now, and it's not blown etc.

I too had to replace my reg-rec 3 times (and had to have the alternator wound twice in a space of 2 years!).

The problem got rectified (excuse the pun) when I wired the MOSFET reg directly to the alternator, completely bypassing a potentially dodgy wiring loom on the bike's charging circuit.

Oh, and THAT seller is awesome in the sense that he puts down on the customs declaration that the item is a "catalogue"! The kit itself comes in a package no bigger than 2-3 DVD cases stacked together. So, it'll fit nicely into your letter box!
