Hey guys,

I'm planning on a cafe racer project this year and I have some rough ideas which I need to put down on paper (in pencil) towards going to my final outcome. The basis of the project will be a CG125 more than likely due to me being a student and money being tight, I've been looking at tails etc and know how to make one myself but my idea is to have an integrated brake light without the need for indicators.

The way I want to fit the tail light is something like this:-
https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Rurslssmt4A/T6t231vbgpI/AAAAAAAAANc/ACaMUm9ziyM/s1600/IMAG0322.jpg

I want to avoid the big gaping gap if I can by making a nice clear lens to suit the curve of the unit, I'm just wondering how I would do that or if it is indeed possible to do at all?

Thanks,
Ben

You might fall foul of the E-mark law (or whatever the current equivalent may be today).

If you can find something that's the right size/shape then you could make a mould and use liquid plastic.

How come? The light in that pic is from a land rover if that helps? surely that is E-marked?

And Liquid plastic is it uber clear Andy?

No indicators as in they are incorporated in the brake light, or just not having indicators and using hand signals?

Could get yourself into trouble otherwise:

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/made wrote:
Minimum separation distance between indicators on opposite sides of a vehicle–
(B)A solo motor bicycle having an engine exceeding 50 cc and first used on or after 1st April 1986–

(2)Rear indicators:
240 mm

Though, if it was 85 or older (which I presume it may be), then you've got a bit more flexibility.

Sorry, I assumed you were going to replace the land rover unit altogether. Carry on...

I've only done bends in acrylic. At school we had a strip heater; at home I use a blow torch and a couple of bits of metal for the 'strips'.

However, I'd have thought if you made a mould and heated the whole area, it'd turn out ok if it was quite thin.

I've not used that particular brand but you can colour it too. I've been trying to find the stuff I've used...

Edit: found it - casting

The CG I've found is a V reg I think, so its 99' or there abouts, deffo need indicators? Sad

As for the brake light itself, I just want it to be a brake light, nothing fancy, I want to build it around a minimal look, but it also needs to be fairly legal too as I cba getting pulled over constantly. It seems I'm asking the right questions just need to work out how to get around the negatives. Thumbs Up Karma

I rode a 2000 zx9r around for ages with no indicators. They didn't even bring it up when I got stopped for 119 and they tried to do me for a couple of other C&U things.

Doesn't mean it was legal, though.

It would seem it does from the document I linked to, but there may be other exemptions etc.

I mean if I can get away with just hand signals then its all good but if I REALLY have to then I don't mind designing around the limitations. I just thought I'd ask because of issues like this, for example is that brake light legal? will covering it with a red or clear cover make it any more or less legal and so on?

I still need to design out the rearsets as I don't want the stock pegs, they might make riding a bit cramped with drop bars.

I would use a male and female mould heat the sheet up, put on the male mould and press on the female. You would only have a few seconds to do it in though.
