It is a legal requirement to display full size L plates on the front and rear of your bike.

Yep, Ls must be displayed front and rear. Must also be on a flat surface strictly speaking. Best way on the front is one that clamps around the fork leg. Should only cost a couple of quid and 10 minutes with a screwdriver to fix it.

A sticker L on the screen works well on the NSR.

Legally you have to displat a inch 7 square on front and rear displayed clearly. For each one not displayed you can be given three points and fined £60. Either use them both correctly or use neither.

As said get one of the stick on ones and stick it on the screen.

Exactly, I would say you are more likely to get done for L plates if you are just using one. If you are using none then they're only going to pull you for riding like a twat, or just a random stop, you won't get done for L plates unless they actually went an checked and at the same time checked your license card. If you're using just one then it is obvious that you can be given three points and fine for.

Any particular reason why you're riding without them, if you're using the motorways then fair enough (yes I'm sure everyone is quite aware that it's illegal, but it's a logical reason to take them off) but if you've just taken them off "because I want to" then it's not worth it IMO, because as you say if you have to make an insurance claim then you're fucked. There is also the possiblity of getting done by the police for not having them, six points and £120.

well the back one fell off one day as i went over a bump, it was only held on with a velcro strip from the previous owner. So i took the front one off as well so it would not look suspicious. I just havent got round to putting them back on again. I need the special yellow number plate screws Laughing

Yep, also the fact that if you have six points on your provisional you can't get a licence till they are clear! even if you only get three points you will have to live in perpetual fear of looseing your licence for being caught speeding once! (which lets face it is very easy to do)

Its really not worth leaveing them off, if you wanna get rid do your test, otherwise just put up with em :/

Its pretty inconsiderate really to ride with them off, yeah you will lose license and wont be able to get insurance again without difficulty.

But imagine what happens if you hit someone or something, i know its unlikely but you could cause enough damage (say hit someone they sweve an smash up their car) and the fact is your insurance wont cover it... so YOU will have to fit the bill.

And what if you cant afford it? sure you get punished, but the other person could lose thousands, even tens of thousands of pounds. You could destroy a person with that kind of debt.

Reason i am so serious about this?

Few weeks ago on the news a little boy, i mean 8 years old without a care in the world, was on because a guy without insurance (in car but same idea) ran him down without insurance. The boy was saved etc on the NHS but has had paralysis in both his legs. Since there was no insurance payout he couldnt afford to give what the boy needed, physio/operation or something that he couldnt get on the NHS cause the guy couldnt afford the payment himself. If he had the money the boy could have either had a better chance of any form of recovery, or at least something to make his destroyed happy life more bearable. That boys life has been ruined and his chances of at least getting the best he can isnt there.

So i would say biker without L's, for the sake of 'looking better' you could ruin a completly innocent persons life.

Chances are slim but it invalidates your insurance, which simply isnt worth it.

There is something called the Motor Insurance Bureau who provide cover in event of an accident involving an uninsured or untraceable driver. The MIB pay out just like any other insurance company, but with one minor difference, they will (attempt) to recover their losses from the uninsured driver.

So that news report was talking shit. The NHS should provide basic stuff such as operations when needed and basic physio, you have to pay for extra physio you want doing which is covered in the claim against the MIB. Basically, they were completly over exagerating it and the vast majority of what they said is not true.

Hmmm.

The NHS only covers the vital needs of a patient as far as i understand it, things like physio or extra's (say cosmetic surgery to remove disfigurement etc) wouldnt be covered unless it was causing suffering. I.e wont provide things to speed up recovery or improve life standards etc.

Didnt know that, BBC (South East if your interested) news made it sound like the little guy wasnt getting what he needed at all. Guess thats the media for you. I remember the case cause the driver (a 16 year old, so obviously no license or insurance) was attempting to turn over the sentence due to it being unrealistic as he couldnt repay it.

But still, the point stands that you shouldnt be putting people in that situation for the sake of looks, just isnt worth it even if only for the financial reasons.

No. As far as I understand the NHS provide necessary medical care. Once you're out of the high risk stage, ie "if we don't do this then they're going to die" then there are waiting lists involved but it does get done. They do provide things to speed up recovery and improve life standards, things which are not 100% necessary, but they do not provide things to imporve life standards which are optional.

Yes, you might be 10x cooler because you don't have L's on your bike, but they are there for a reason, they tell other drivers that you not that experienced and that you are a probable liability on the road and that you have not been tested to a satisfactory standard.

You can get physiotherapy on the NHS, no bother at all. It's about the only department in which they only book patients that they've got time for. If a patient fails to show, the physiotherapist just goes and has a tea break. Hence you never have to wait for a physiotherapy appointment, and every time I've needed to arrange a new one at short notice they've managed to fit me in on the same day or in the next couple.

You pay shedloads of taxes in this country for a reason. You pay for that treatment you hope you never need, that fire engine/ ambulance/ police car you hope never needs to be there.

You pay all this money for something you hope you aren't going to need to use, so you'd hope you'd get your money's worth when you do need it. The vital needs of a patient are really quite wide-ranging, and really speaking, the NHS provides for patient needs, not patient wants.

Hence you won't get breast implants paid for by the NHS just because you think yours are too small, but if you've had a mastectomy, then they quite likely will pay for it as it is not just a statement of vanity.

The media will always spin things to create a greater effect on their viewing/ reading/ listening public, especially commercial news outlets. The more seemingly important the story, the more people will watch it, and hence the advertising, so more money to the commercial channels etc.
___________________________________________________

Back on topic, I think riding without L plates when you are supposed to have them on is a stupid thing to do. You are risking being as good as disqualified from riding, just for the sake of vanity and some kind of desire to be seen as a 'proper biker' without having done the full test.

But when you do need to use it they don't always give you anywhere near 'your moneys worth'. My mum broke her ankle, they examined it and decided that they were going to pin it, they also told her that if it wasn't pineed she would have problems with it for the rest of her life. The next day as she was ready to go for the operation they told her that it had been moved as there was an emergency, but it was going to be done. Then the staff were trying to get a bed on the ward for this emergency and tried to get some old lady to go back to the nursing home she was meant to be in but she refused going on about how she knew her rights and wasn't going anywhere. So they then kicked my mum out without a date for the operation to be done as they were no longer going to do it, despite the fact the previous day they told her if it wasn't done she would have life long problems. About 18 since it happened and they still havn't done it, they now say it is too late to pin it. Rolling Eyes Thumbs Down

That's some bad shit. Sad I was really quite lucky in that my nearest hospital is be less than 10 years old and seems to be properly run. I would have thought pinning an ankle might be pretty high priority really though?
Confused

Pensioners staying in hospitals longer than they need to annoys me. Often they have cite loneliness as a reason, but plenty of old people have cats for that. If they aren't capable of looking after themselves, but have nothing wrong with them, then they should be booted out. They'd boot a younger person out/ move them to a residential home if they had nothing wrong, wouldn't they?

Let's hope it heals okay and that they can sort out the physiotherapy properly.

So what? The fact that someone is there to pick up the tab doesn't justify driving or riding without.
