What sort of damage will I take for a DAS including test fees and any associated costs (e.g. bike hire)? How much do I need to budget for to take care of this?

I've been off the road for a few years but used to ride a 125 around on a CBT. I failed my practical bike test before they split it up into two modules, so my chances are less this time around. However when I took my test some years ago I did it at Croydon: not a good idea.

So what this means is I feel I have some experience but may be rusty. I want to get a licence in the shortest possible time but this time around I want to try a DAS rather than hot footing it solo. So I envisage taking a DAS over a few days rather than 2 or 3.

Thanks

Prices vary for DAS allot near me they range from £500 - £800 for 3 day courses.

The best thing would be to go onto google and look up the companies in your area. That will give you the general price, don't forget that you will also have to include a helmet and some gear into your budget. Unless you are lucky/unlucky to use the schools.

I'm in the middle of mine; passed Mod1 last week, and do Mod2 this Wednesday. The cost is £395 all inclusive. i.e. includes 600cc Honda Hornet for the 3 days, test fees, helmet, gloves, boots, jacket, trousers etc. I'm doing it with CJ Balls in Norwich.

£500 upwards but this really depends on where you are in the country, how long it actually takes you (failing/retests etc.), if you want a good recommended school then you may pay more.

If you can ride well enough to pass a test it shouldn't matter where you take it.

Sounds like your experience was a long time ago, too long to be of any use. Intensive DAS courses are usually 5 days, you need a day for your CBT, Mod 1 and then Mod 2, so you aren't going to be able to do it in a few days.

Tell us where you are and maybe somebody can recommend a good school.

How the chuff are they doing it for that? That would barely cover the instructor's wages, let alone overheads.

All of day 1 on the bike either on the road or at their Mod1 simulation track. Day 2 early start to get as much training in as possible before the test time. So imho it could not have been better.
Mod2 will be the same; solid time riding the bike until the test in late afternoon. Really looking forward to it Smile

Incidentally, I did my CBT with them and that was the same; training all day (part theory, part on the bike around the city) until 5pm. They couldn't have crammed more in.

That's really great, you couldn't ask to be paying less than £100 a day (plus test fees). Thumbs Up

Smash it in, by the way. Very Happy

I'm not a believer in that kind of doctrine, sorry. The enhancements to the test benefits instructors and the department of transport but makes things very difficult and time-consuming for someone just trying to get what they need (a licence). Riding well enough in an exaggerated rule-stickler way under an examiner's critical eye for a couple of hours doesn't say anything about someone's judgement and responsibility.

In a perfect world where every test is the same it shouldn't matter, though, I agree. I liked the Croydon test center and the examiner was a nice and reasonable guy. I had ridden a long way there (from Reading) and rode all the way back. However riding for a test is different from everyday riding because there's less room for discretion and judgment calls. In a place like Croydon where the traffic is heavy and the population is dense, at rush hour there may be random apes crossing the road when you want to turn into it. That is what happened to me, and I decided to ride through even though they had taken a foot into the road. Technically it's 'dangerous' but in the real world if I know someone is there I'm not going to run into them. Every rider does things like that from time to time. Which is why I would like to take my test somewhere less chaotic this time around.

I agree my experience may be too long ago to be of much use. 5 days seems about right. If anyone can recommend a DAS provider around Reading that would be much appreciated. Thanks for the estimates, although I am surprised as they seem a bit on the low side if they are to include all costs (hire and testing fees).

So you failed because you did not give priority to pedestrians who had started to cross (rule 170 in the highway code). Nothing to do with Croydon, more to do with your riding.

You've fallen off and had more accidents than me. Nothing to do with other road users, more to do with your riding and your innate lack of ability.

Now we've got that over with, you mentioned you would recommend a DAS provider.

No, I'll look it up though, thanks. I would prefer a provider in the Berkshire area (close to Reading) if possible.

For me

Theory = £31
CBT = £109
DAS = 5, 4 hr sessions, 2 test fees, and Collision insurance all for £670

A MOD 1 re test will cost me £134
a MOD 2 re test will cost me £194

I have also bought myself 2 books = £22.00, jacket = £55.00 and a pair of gloves, £25.00.

Its not a cheap getting a licence especially if you fail a MOD test but it will all be worth it in the end! Very Happy

I'm sitting my DAS with proscot in fife. Got a deal on the now. 22 hours of lessons, mod 1, mod 2 and extra training up to three times if mod 1 or 2 failed for £570.

Bike hire, insurance, etc.

Those fee's you've mentioned are for the test alone.

Ah glad you cleared that up. Still sounds expensive tho. I payed only £30 extra for my DAS to be "guaranteed" for up to three attempts. which means I only pay test fees. Have read that only some schools can actually do that tho.

You are amazing! 1 day on this site and 4 posts in you know my riding history, are you psychic? FYI I haven't had an accident or fallen off a bike in the 25 years I've been riding on the road.

I'm giving you some advice from the perspective of a certified DAS instructor. Don't throw your toys out of the pram when you don't agree with it.
