My insurance company rang about key cover or something so I thought I'd ask how much extra it would be to add commuting and they said......£200!!! Shocked I can understand business use or something but and extra £200 just for commuting is ridiculous

I also asked if my policy included riding other bikes....you have to be 25 Rolling Eyes

(my brool story co of the day)

Very odd, I don't think I've ever been charged extra for commuting... I shall go and review a recent quote to see if it makes a difference.

I already have the policy with them and was thinking of adding it on. Maybe if you run it as a quote it doesn't come up as extra??

I'm with Kwik Fit (express insurance). I just renewed with them as other quotes were not far off, had ridiculous excess and obviously I'd have to pay the deposit

I was with WickedQuotes, thought they were great at first - £580 full comp incl. commuting gear cover etc. on my Street Triple (23y/o with 3 years NCD). This year however my renewal came through, £890 with £650 excess Shocked !! Apparently having another years NCD makes no odds, they've re-run the risks on some bikes and deem the Street Triple too much for a 24 y/o, hence stupid quote.

I've gone elsewhere for £520, though the excess is still £650 Sad (tried 11 companies, all wanted £650 excess minimum, most I've ever paid in the past is £250).

Edit: - Sorry to hi-jack the thread somewhat, just needed to vent about twatish insurance companies...

I've just run a quote through for the ZZR 600 and it's come back at £2000!

just-motorcycleinsurance.com were by far the cheapest insurer for me after I ended up lumbered with a 20k claim last year. Half the price of the other guys such as gocompre, etc. Might be worth checking them out.

With regards to high excess, I have excess cover which costs a bit extra but it means they pretty much pay the excess for you if that makes sense

Ehh?

I was running quotes for next April to see which bikes were cheapest to insure. I'll be 20 then. The Street Triple came back at £300... I have 1 fault claim against me. Laughing

MCE have consistently been the cheapest for me. That's not a commendation, just a comment.

I am with the Ramasis Insurance camp here, been with them for four years now on different bikes and they are fantastic. Have had ride other bikes on my policy since I was 17. Laughing!

They are very, very cheap in my experience and they add ride other bikes for what amounted to <5% of my total premium on each bike. This combined with the fact that when I called to do my renewal he worked my insurance coverage to give me the exact same cover for like £55 less than my renewal which was great already (not marked up with the loyalty discount) really sets them apart in my opinion.

If you google "Ramasis Insurance" go to their website and do a quote on there with ride other bikes and see what it comes out as, it may well be very cheap compared to your current/next policy and worth checking. An extra £200 just for adding commuting seems mad, depending on what your policy cost you originally of course but insurance, law unto themselves, etc.

Cheers!

Jesus! Makes me glad I'm old.

£122.58 this year with H&R for TPFT inc. commuting on an '06 Speed Four with 1 yr NCB at age 30.

That's less than half of last years.

Rasmesis, Hmm, just did a quote for my explorer. Cheapest £281.62 with £400 excess. The next with no excess is £471.

I can get way cheaper than that.

Same here Very Happy wicked quotes are great, i was so surprised when the documents came through with the ride other bikes. Its also worded in a way in which you just need the owners permission and mentions nothing of the owner having insurance.

So could that be used to ride a newly bought bike home?

to be fair you should have done quotes in the first instance with commuting on as you know at somepoint you'll be itching to beat the traffic in your daily grind.

everyone knows how insurance companies work, they'll try and get out of aything so if you crash going to work you're stuffed.

if it's any consolation I made the mistake/though i was being sensible and mentioned to my car insurer once that i was driving to uni and they said that they'd have to amend my policy to a business policy as driving to work and driving to uni classes as two places of work. annoying bt fortunate really cos I wrote my car off that year driving to uni Laughing

I'm due to renew in May and been looking for insurance quotes.

I've had my licence and bike a year now. first year on a ZZR600 was £550 social only.

Now it will be garaged at the missus' mums house honest (if it gets nicked I'm not claiming anyway) and for SDP and commuting I can get it for £224. Better than half price this year with Swinton ... I'm gonna do a search and read millions of horror storys for them

Never said I commute on mine. They want excessive amounts and I only really use the Varadero to commute, multibike policy ramps the price up somewhat stupidly.

Try google search. You will find insurance companies use different policy to set premium.
Some are cheap and restricted some are expensive with less restriction.
Some are cheap and not restrictive depending on circumstance.
Some charge £1000 one way they quote but only charge £500 next day for the same risk but through an online quote engine.

For my money I would let the policy expire and tell them to do one when they ask you to renew OR... Find out how much you'll get back if you cancel the existing policy (If there is substantial time left on it. i.e. more than six months to be worth it after admin deductions)
Buy a new policy from them with commuting included.
