Interesting watch
I'm doing my 4th track day at Brands Indy in June and am keen to learn how to ride round better.
I noticed you both had different lines around the track, which is something I'm looking to learn more. Your line seemed more like something I would do.
The other bit I noticed was JD was more than less upright when cornering (helmet level with tank) and slipping off the seat and KD.
Then from the pictures you hang off and your head goes towards the front of the bike.
Is it easy to explain how you hang off? I hang off currently like JD.

Cool vids, I love that track myself.
It looks like your mate on the R1 was slowing you down quite a bit in the first clip. ____________________ You only get one lap of lifes track . . . . so make it a fast one !

Hi mate, I can try give you a few tips but I’m not quick yet. I try learn off people every time a ride so any advice I give people is normally something I’ve been told and tried myself or picked up from watching others who are better/more experienced than me.
I was taking quite wide lines as it allows you to apex late to get the bike sat up and fire it out of the corner, my rear tyre was completely knackered so I was very cautious while getting the power down. For track days wide lines are normally best I find as the bike is cranked over for less time, it makes it easier to get a smooth roll on and it doesn’t matter if someone comes up the inside of you.
Hanging off properly is something I’ve been working on recently actually, I went out with an instructor at Cadwell at the start of this month and asked where I could make up the time I was losing (compared to the pace I want to be) and he said a good chunk of it will come from carrying more corner speed. In the morning I had a few issues with grounding out various parts so he suggested I try hang off a lot more so I’ve been working on it since and it seems to be making a difference. He said I was moving across but I was more in the position to ‘kiss my screen’ rather than ‘kiss my mirror’ which is where you want to be.
Make sure you are moving your arse well before the corner, it’s best to get in position before you start braking where you can and always before turn in. For example I tuck right in down the straight at brands (chin of helmet on tank and arse pushed back) then as I get into the second half of the straight I will push my arse across using my knees on the tank (still tucked) then wait for my braking marker before popping up from behind the screen to aid braking. As you start to turn in your inside shoulder should drop and relax and as you have already got your bottom half in the right place there is less going on which helps keep the bike settled. Try to get your head right off the bike towards where the mirror should be and your outside arm can rest on the tank to help keep your grip on the bars light and relaxed. It will feel quite weird at first (it did for me) and it always feels like you are hanging off a lot more than you are. Make sure you are using your outside leg to secure you on the bike by pressing it against the tank to keep weight off the bars.
I would recommend trying this for just one corner at a time though to make it easier. Go out for your first session of the day and ride as normal to get yourself back in the swing of things then in your second session pick a corner to start on, druids could be a good one to use as it’s a slower corner, and work on getting your arse across before you brake, really moving your head out and imagine you are trying to touch your elbow on the floor by dropping your inside shoulder as much as you can. Best to knock off a bit of speed as you’re doing this while you get used to it and then build it back up to where you were before through the session. Once you’re happy that you’ve got druids nailed move on to the next corner in the next session, Graham Hill bend would make sense, then work your way around the track one corner at a time until it all comes together.
Not sure if you use the knee to knee technique for moving side to side, it’s a tricky one to get the hang of but does help keep the bike settled, look it up on youtube (think it’s under Superbike School Knee to Knee).
Sorry for the essay…bit bored at work today, but hope that helps! If you want any info on braking points etc let me know.

Matt that is gold!
I'll be reading it again before I go and will pass on to the couple of people I'm going with.
Few insights I took from what you've said:
‘kiss my mirror’ - I'll try and get comfortable with this throughout the day
Make sure you are moving your arse well before the corner - never done this before so will be a first, should be interesting.
'one corner at a time' - I'll practice on druids as mentioned, that was the corner I favoured last times I've been.
Thanks for the advice, can't wait now! ____________________ Rides: Honda XR 125 ('03) Honda CBR 600F ('91), Ducati 916 Biposto ('95) |
