Hi there, new on here so i hope i don't sound too stupid.
I'm 48 this year, i had a bike for 3 years from when i was 17, then i passed my car test and the usual happened...the bike was sold and i carried on driving.
I'm desperate to get back into biking, I'm not after a 1000cc super bike that does 600mph but a nice cruiser (Triumph America or a Harley Sportster) so I'm looking into a 5 day intensive DAS course to do do my CBT and tests. Obviously after not biking for 28 years I'm a bit nervous. I remember the basics of biking i.e gear changing, breaking and the road sense wont be a problem as i drive for a living now and consider myself a safe, respectful and careful driver. My questions are...how easy will it be to go straight onto a 500+cc bike for my training? when i was 17-20 i had a Honda 125 custom and although this was one of the heaviest 125s of the time it does worry me riding a much bigger and heavier bike. How are the instructors? Will they expect me to be competent or will they give me time for the rustiness and nerves to go. Will the 5 day course be enough to prepare me for my tests?

Sorry for going on and i hope I've covered everything.

Thanks

You probably won't go straight onto a big bike. The first day (CBT) is normally done on a 125, helps get you riding and build your confidence up. After a day on a 125 you will be happy to get on a bigger bike and although it sounds odd, they are easier to ride.

I trained lots of people in your situation and they are, as a rule, nice and easy to teach. As long as you listen and soak it all up it will be fine. DAS is designed to take a non rider through to a full licence.

Instructors are a mixed bunch, some are excellent and patient, some are raving mad screaming numpties. Maybe find a school that comes recommended.

You shouldnt have any problems with previous experience, you'll find that you slide back into the routine within 1/2 an hour.

Might be worth posting your area/location so people can give advice on good training centres and instructors Question

Hi there

After a 18 year rest Wink I got back on a bike, did my CBT and got a 125. Then did my DAS, I found the Bigger Bikes much better, better brakes, better suspension, much easter to control at low speed and higher speeds. In all the Big Bike was easier to ride then a 125 lol.

If you're willing to travel in to Hinckley, there is a good one that Mike told me about. I didn't use them in the end as I couldn't afford it at the time, but Mike gives them good reviews:

Down the A5, Hinkley Rider Training Scheme.

As for the rest; dont expect car driving to give you any great advantage; pre-existing knowledge has as many disadvantages as advantages; we all learn at our own rate; if you already drive, just means you need to learn different things.

Biggest probs for long term car drivers are breaking car driver habbits of being mirror dependent, and forgetting to cancel indicators... though some do forget other stuff, like putting thier feet down when they stop.... and even had a student reach for a hand-brake! Laughing

5-Days? - its do-able, but it only gets you a licence, bia emersion learning; how much is useful other than passing test, and how much of it sticks once out of the micro-bubble is mutable.

Hinkley DONT do intensive training.... its weekly lessons.

Get a 125, do some time on one after CBT, to practice what you are tought in lessons each week, you'll progress reasonably fast and learn a lot more, and it will be cheaper.

See webby... kink in sig below.

I was 52 when I did my DAS after a 26 year break.

If you nip down the A3 to Pompey you could use 1st Castle, as I did. Really good school. Smile

Good luck with it. Thumbs Up
