So thanks to 3rd directive im off to do my Mod 1, again but on a 650 tomorrow. Im meeting the instructor at Aberdeens test centre at the ungodly hour of 8:30AM. So no Vino Collapso for me tonight.

Apart from the instructor pointing out all the bad habits ive no doubt picked up over the last year the only thing about the Mod1 that concerns me is getting the right speed for the avoidance and emergancy stop. On my 125 I knew that if I hit the limiter in 2nd gear then im at the right speed, so no probs. So any tips for what to expect on the Mod 1 on a 650cc bike?

Second gear at about 4/5 k revs should see you at around 52kph. When I was tested on the 500 I just gunned it in second and didn't go over the speed

good luck on mod 1, when I did mine a few years back on a 500 my instructor told me to get into 2nd quickly, slowly increase speed as I start going round the bend and 3/4s of the way round get into 3rd and open the throttle, just before the avoidance cones close the throttle, same idea with the emergency stop, just remember DONT look at the cones or YOU WILL hit them, try and plot a line past them before you reach them, ( easier said than done, I know ) the emegency stop use both brakes, and dont worry if you skid, just release and put them on again but DO try and keep it straight, I had a skid but the examanier said that it was ok as he saw that I was in complete control. One last thing try and relax and stay loose, if you think you have made a mistake dont worry about it just keep going and carry on as if nothing happend, the examiner will tell you when to stop if you have made a complete balls up, hope this helps a bit and again good luck Thumbs Up

I guess nobody ever likes a test.

Why?

I've seen this suggested a few times and the only explanation that I've heard is that "it impresses the examiner".

In a one-off pass/fail test, that seems about as important as giving a Hanoi hooker the Pretty Woman treatment.

You don't need to get it into third gear for the avoidance or E-stop manoevres. On a 500cc, second was plenty to get it 2mph over the line - just gun the throttle as you come upright after the bend. On a 650, 3rd gear will have you truly cock it up.
Good luck!

You wanna be in second to the the corner well really, plus you'll slow down quicker in second, known of people to go all the way through the blue cones after the speed test

remember aswell if you don't make the speed the 1st time they will ask you to go again, so you really have 2 attempts (maybe even 3?) so I wouldn't worry. When I did my mod 1 I nearly cocked up on the manual handling, I got a minor for having to correct it lol

How on earth do you cock up the manual handling?

Well you are supposed to do it in one clean swoop, bay to bay. As I got closer I realised I wasn't going to make it into the second bay without going forwards and correcting the angle of the turn. I remember thinking at the time 'oh shit I've messed up on the first damn bit' Laughing

I don't think it matters if you three point turn it, just as long as the obs are done properly and the bike dousent end on its side.

What would be a funny prank would be if you could actually levitate the bike, fail or pass I wonder? Hmm time to write Derran Brown a letter.

I do my manual handling as a three point turn as my instructor said it would be easier for me being short.

Don't know about the " impressing the examiner " bit, I tried to do it in second and found that I was more comfortable and in more control in third, when it came to stoping I just dropped it into second to give more braking power, it worked for me, but I won't knock anyone else's idea's or suggestions, as long as it's safe and works Thumbs Up

Was actually just training today. Which was ok. The only thing is adapting to the clutch biting point on a different bike to the one ime used to. Oh and the bloody gear lever on the CBF600 I can't ever find it with my foot so have to fumble about scraping my foot up the side hoping I snag it to go up the gears. Otherwise easy to ride. Slalom no probs same with the figure of eight and U turn just a bit revvy. I wish I had my own 600 thoughi could just tool around on for long enough to not have to think about the controls. Mod 1 is laughably easy on a bike your used to.

Oh dear. Bit of a Fate-poke to say that just before you hope to start a "Passed my Mod 1" thread. Very Happy

That road is so bad for safe overtakes now, used to be able to really scream off to Fraserburgh and just fly past cars, but what with all the traffic now it's less fun. Crying or Very sad
