I've signed off JSA an working from friday the 10th Mr. Green Cool Mr. Green

Well It had to happen at some time and it has happened I've managed to grab my first break. Got the induction next week on Friday 9-5pm. Then apparently I'm in on the Saturday 6am - 2pm. I'll be working in a warehouse 24hrs a week. However as this is my first job I've got some questions that I think the forum might be able to help me on.

First off anyone that has worked/or works in a warehouse that travels by bike, what do you wear as in gear on the bike. All I've been told so far is it's hi viz and Steel Toe caps Question

Also are there any important questions I'll have to ask as it's my first job I'm not sure to be honest what I've got to know Question

Textile jacket and textile trousers to go over the top of my work gear. Change when you get there.

Nicely done. I'd reckon that they'll most likely be OK with black jeans or cargo trousers (that's proper black, not the faded ones), and a nondescript T-shirt; they're obliged to provide PPE I believe, so the Hi-Vis and toecapped boots will be on them, along with any gloves/hard hat/whatever else they deem necessary.

They'll most likely talk you through the things you need in your induction session, though; that is, after all, what an induction is usually for.

They do offer PPE however the boots are mass ordered, the Russian woman informed me that they have to mass order so use your own if they are comfortable. I know I might be over thinking this just don't want to screw it up and give them any reason to get rid of me.

Last time I worked in a warehouse, I was given a locker, I kept my steel toe caps and hi-vis in there after my shift, and stored my biking gear in there during. I didn't like the feeling of steelies and changing gears (or lack thereof)

The few days I didn't have a locker, my gear was kept in the office, in the corner away from morons and their feet, and my steelies were transported in a shitty backpack.

On my induction, I was supplied toe protectors to wear over my bike boots, made me sound like a horse trotting along.

All for £7.35/hour for me Neutral (proctor&gamble)

Congrats anyways on getting a job Thumbs Up

Nice one Thumbs Up

At least you got off your arse and applied for jobs unlike many who just sit around doing bog all and moaning about the inconvenience of having to go sign on.

To be honest the problem I think I'll have to start it off is actually getting some sleep around 10/12 I normally don't sleep till 4am. But yeah it's only 10 miles, 5 of them miles being A roads; so a pretty easy commute anyway.

When I went for the interview in full suit, I saw a guy putting a helmet in a locker although not sure about the induction. What did you wear when you went to the induction by the way hopefully you went by bike Question

Congrats dude, I get a locker with my job (although that is clinical waste treatment) I assume most jobs provide them?

6am is a nice start time, no traffic, I rarely see more than 5 cars heading into work, plus the bird song is lovely.

I did indeed go by bike, I had bought some cheap steelies for the induction, about £25, good enough. I rode there in jeans, t-shirt, jacket, boots, gloves and helmet. Attended the induction in my gear pretty much. It was agency, so I managed to leave my helmet in the agencies on-site office.

The induction was taken up with crappy H&S stuff, and general complete skip-licker weeding out stuff. The only PPE I required was hi-vis and steel toe caps, I got my own steelies instead of wearing some abandoned shitty pair they were going to supply.

I should imagine you'd get a locker there, might not be straight away though. I had to wait about a week, and apparently, I was lucky. There was also a deposit required for my locker, it may be the same where you're going, you may need to ask.

Your millage may vary though, however, everything they deem you worthy to know should be covered in the induction. P&Gs dress code insisted on jeans, shorts below the knee at worst, Other places will have different rules I'm sure.

I worked in a warehouse briefly many years ago. If you had worked there for a few weeks you were provided a uniform (cargo trousers, t shirt and fleece). I only worked there a couple of weeks so I wore my kevlar jeans.

It's a warehouse. They won't be too bothered about what you wear. The really important thing is that you do what you're told, and turn up on time. Warehouse managers can be utter dicks - still quite low pay, but a feeling of power over a handful of people. Turning up late is something they really get uppity about.

Nice I'm not going through an agency but they do have a security office so I might ask them about leaving my helmet there if I give them a fiver when I go for the induction. I did ask about the helmet and was told at the interview the task manager would be the best person to talk to.

Mileage at the moment doesn't really bother me It's not like it costs that much anyway on the CG, although would be a benefit not having to pay for fuel out of wages.

yaigi wrote:

Thanks well at the moment main thing is getting the CG ready for MOT then license, not sure how much the first pay packet is actually going to be or how they will be paying me monthly/week in hand. After that it's new gear and an xj600 I think. Although I'm not sure about upgrading at the moment it's £350 on insurance would be nice for a bigger bike though to have more fun.

Hopefully can get some overtime when I've got the hang of things so can do the objectives faster. Oh also a graphics tablet and a new mobile phone, to be honest the list is longer than my wish for crisps.

Ah that reminds me of Aldi managers I've met, they have an Audi as a company car and 40k a year but they are utter complete pricks, to be honest the place I went didn't seem that bad most of the people working there were Russian and quite a few nice lasses. They also have the radio on all day so at least it's not a complete bore. Thanks for the input Thumbs Up

Not what I meant, sorry. Your Millage May Vary (YMMV) is a phrase, your experience may be a bit different. You'll definitely be expected to fill your own tank.

As for lateness, yeah, they jump on that like a tramp on chips. More than likely you'll be on the clock anyway. Don't be tempted to clock out early, Many people were docked by 15 minutes for clocking out a few minutes early (I'm talking under 5 minutes here) Might not happen at your new place, but it certainly did at my old one.

Do as you're told, and you'll be fine.

Ooh dang it never heard of that phrase before, no need to worry about lateness, I aim to be there at least 15 mins early. Just encase anything goes wrong on the way I'm not late. When I was doing the full time volunteering I stayed over normally an extra half hour, however I'll keep that noted. Making sure I leave after the check out zone and not before :Y:
