I took my test in 2009, just before the mod1/mod2 split. I did it on my own 125. My understanding is that doing that gives me a 2 year 25kw restricted period, after which I'm automatically eligible to ride any bike. However, I've just been chatting to someone who is adamant that I need to retest on a big bike to get big bike entitlement.

Who is right?

Check with your local DVLA office or phone them and give them your info like you've stated your did your test prior the new rules that came into effect and so possibly you could be coming under the old rules rather than later one?

Phone them to or better still visit your local office to make sure!

I'm pretty sure I got in before the new rules. All being well I should find out anyway in a few weeks. My current license says Cat A with <=25kw, but my car test is next week. Assuming I pass, my license should hopefully come back without the <=25kw note, which then presumably counts as a full A license.

Great to know, thanks. I was 99% sure, but that 1% was potentially fucking up my bike shopping Smile

Yup, you're fine, you've already got full A entitlement.

Just don't send off your license, or hand it to DSA Derek, unless you're sure that you've still got your bike pass certificate somewhere safe.
