I was watching the Top Gear with Clarkson going around the Nurburg ring in Germany. It made me want to really do it, however it's 400 miles of motorways away Sad The idea of traveling around a foreign country sounds fun but not if it's all going to be motorways.

Anyone know somthing similar but closer? Of course there is always a track day but this seemed like it could be good fun. Anyone been on the Nurburg ring?

It was strange watching Clarkson blasting past bikers in a diesel Jag.

I thought all the bikes would just bugger off and not be seen.

I watched that as well and really want to go over with some mates in summer but now that you say 400miles just to get there would be rather nasty.Seems like a brilliant track and nice and long but i reckon closest thing hear is track days probably?
Come to think about it i might wait till i'm on a 600 or something to do it instead of a 125 lol

Germany would be fun on motorways with the Autobahns which if I'm correct allow you or used to allow you to go as fast as you like.

Yep, they have specific sections where there are no limits. Obviously near junctions etc that have enforced limits for safety. It's the only place I've seen a Porsche Police car on the road.

yeah, your right. I suppose 400 miles would be pretty quick at 150mph. Still a bit too far to go though

You have to be carefull if you go there as they sometimes close the ring for tests without giving any notice. So you could ride all the way there to find you can't actually go on the ring. Sad Its worth going thet way for a week and B&B'ing it at a town or village close by.

The girl (Sabine) who thrashed Clarcson runs the Ring Taxi's and know their way around the Ring.

There are mutterings of a tour to the Nurburgring and back across the south of France next August in the LUMCC (Loughborough Uni MCC), I'd assume it'd be open to outsiders. Thinking All I know is that I'll be unlikely to be able to afford it.

What you must remember is that if you ride there, you really don't want to stack your bike on the track - could make getting home rather interesting! Shocked
As for 400 miles, why not split it into two 200 mile trips, and stop for the night half way? That way you could avoid the long motorway slog which is VERY boring, and find some nice A roads Cool

Remember, Germany has slightly more 'relaxed' speed limitd... which should see you getting there a bit quiker Smile.

i live in Düsseldorf, anyone coming over here, give me a nod

it's true there are no-limit sections on the autobahn, but not all of it.
speed cameras are front only though Smile
a few unmarked cars about, and a few 'camera with car waiting further up' sometimes
if you were coming from calais though, via belgium, (call in at spa?) you'd only be in germany for a tiny part of the journey (the 'ring is on the west side of germany, relatively close to the border)
ps, lovely roads all around the 'eifel' (mildly mountainous national park type region around 'ring) and plenty of little b&bs)

Hi

With Clarkson having a hand in the editing he could choose who was seen to be overtaking him.

He managed a 9 minute 59 second lap, Sabine managed 9 minute 12 seconds in the same car. The new BMW K1200S managed it in 7 minutes 57 seconds with one of their test riders on it.

While it is in Germany, it is in the bottom left hand corner. Main country you are probably going to travel through is Belgium.

All the best

Keith

the text on the nürbrugring sign pictured in the link in the first post says:

"the nordschleife (that's the name of the course) is not only the most beautiful piece of tarmac between the north and south poles, it also has the nickname "green hell" - and with good reason. treacherous hills, blind corners and variable grip on the track make the eifel course, for beginners above all, a demanding challenge
especially tricky sections are marked with a sign *
also: the nordschleife is not a modern racetrack, rather it is the most beautiful country road, with no oncoming traffic - so no risk" (yeah right!)

You can always buy project gotham racing 2 and drive a ferrari enzo around a beautifully rendered exact replica of the track! Its fecking full of nightmare twists n turns as the easy corners look exactly the same as the deadly ones (the difference not being noticable until you hit them)! Laughing

I did the ring earlier this year with some mates.
We rode to Spa in Belgium and stayed there in a biker b&b. The owner is an ex-brit who is also an instructor at the ring. Included in the reasonable price of the b&b is instruction at the ring and he will make sure you only go when there are public sessions.
This is usually weekends and evenings.

Whatever you do dont go over and treat it as a track day cos you will crash and die. There are lots of very deceptive corners and blind crests. There are no run off's at all so you CANT make mistakes. Find someone who knows the track and you can follow at a sensible speed.

The track is treated like a road......you can only overtake on the left.....you have to indicate.......and any accidents are investigated by the police.

I was lapping when the track was very busy and there were old couples in camper vans going round.
You have to be very aware of whats behind you and keep to the right. You dont want a 20 year old local in a GT3 on your back tyre

Also you can check at the marshalls point to find out about oil spills and such on track. They shut the track as soon as there is any but its good to know where it was/is.

Anyone want more info or pics pm me.

As SP1 said, doing Spa AND the Nurburgring is the best idea, two of the best circuits in the world in the same trip, makes it a lot more worthwhile. The ring is not that much further once you've got to Spa. And the beer is superb!!

I've never been to the Ring, but been to Spa on several occasions for work. But never been round the circuit.

Me and two mates are debating whether to do a week/long weekend and take in Spa and the Ring next year.

There is no other circuit like the Nurburgring in the world. However, Cadwell Park has been likened to a 'mini-nurburgring' on many occasions, and the BCF gang have gone really well there! Wink Very Happy

Can't say that it'd be really my thing. I guess I would'nt mind if the circuit was just open to bikes but cars as well... The figure what they qouted on there of 200 people having died on the circuit did'nt fill me with confidence either. Still, if they had a bikes only day I'd be there in a shot (as well as hiring a decent bike for it).

I dont think the cars are the real danger to the bikers on the ring.
The track itself it. Mainly for the non bike crash friendly design.
Quite a lot of the deaths are car drivers.
