After thinking a bike was getting pulled near me I noticed a policeman parked up having a cig. Asked what was happening and he explained the bikesafe course.

Thinking of doing it as its just round the corner from me and only £25.

Couple of questions for anyone that has done it tho.

1. Is it any good / worth it?

2. I have a not so legal plate and can. Will I be allowed to do it?

Thanks,

So basically you turned up to a road riding course run by the Police on a bike that isn't in full compliance with the law, and expected to still be able to do the course?

Laughing

On the flip side, I did my bikesafe course about 18 months ago on a GS500. They looked at my licence and asked if it was restricted. I said "yes, you can take a look if you want", and that was good enough for them.

Course was very much worth it as an opener to advanced training, still using a lot of the techniques they introduced me to on a daily basis in the car or on a bike.

I did mine last week in Wakefield. It costs me £60 for the full day so £25 is an absolute steal assuming its for the full day?

I'd definitely recommend it as a route into advanced riding. My bike was checked over but not with a fine tooth comb, though it is legal and he may have noticed an illegal plate. He also may not have cared though as to me it just felt like i was with a bunch of advanced riders sharing their knowledge rather than the Rozzers

I'd rather boil my head than ride with a copper.

£60 sounds a bit excessive.

I did mine a few years ago (link in my profile), but it was £25 including a meal at the Ace Cafe.

And - seeing that they're happy for you to exceed the speed limit, it's not actually that unreasonable to think they might ignore a louder exhaust.

I don't think my bike was checked particularly, but they generally do want you to have a fully road legal bike.

Note that you may well be able to get a similar (but less preachy) day for free at your local IAM group.

Copy of Police Motorcycle Roadcraft + a free assessed ride with IAM / RoSPA = BikeSafe.

Although some insurers do give a small discount for completing BikeSafe, so it might be "worth" it on that basis.

I did it with Strathclyde, but can't speak to how interested they were in the bikes as it was massively over-subscribed and they had to palm the rides off on the local IAM anyway.

Then you would be missing out on a learning experience.

Rolling Eyes Oh! sorry, forgot not everyone is interested in learning stuff!

On topic, IMHO Bikesafe is worth doing. Also you may find your local IAM bike chapter do a free introduction taster session. It's up to you if you then pay and do the training and test. IAM clubs can be a little cliquey but there is possibly some insurance premium reduction (it will however take years before and insurance discount covers the cost of the course/test). I cannot put a price on how much the training may decrease your chances of accident though.

I never stop learning. I'm like a sponge for knowledge.

But I can't see any benefit in a bit of escorted speeding, when as soon as plod fucks off you're back to square one.

My father would tell this story of one of the lads on one of the tall ship training vessels. The ones with the rigging and sails.

Anyhow, a group of lads were doing training on this. Never done anything like it before. One lad was seen as being idle, would appear to just sit and daydream while the others got on with the jobs.

Then when needed it was found he could tackle the rigging, set the sails and know exactly which ropes to pull or slacken. He hadn't just been free-wheeling along but watching and learning from the good and bad points of the other lads.

IMHO similar scenario to the Bikesafe rides, you take what you can from it.

Ok thanks for all the help.

Just figure for £25 - a full days riding, free lunch and some useful tips from police (whilst discounted insurance every year) is pretty worth it.

Might change my plate and insert the baffle for the day. Hopefully that will be ok for them.

Cheers all!
