help! what to do after an epic MOT fail

Ladies and gents

I took my CB500 in today for an MOT and it failed....quite catastrophically...

I know i wasnt getting done as i watched the MOT take place and they showed me what they were failing on but the list consists of:

front and rear tyre as one is worn and the other has a large slit
rear suspension leaking
bent handle bars
petrol cap seized! that happened since last filled up a few days ago!
new chain and sprockets
potential new master cylinder as ive had it rebuilt before and in a few months its gotten spongy again.

anyway the total with VAT is £800 and they sort of advised me not to carry out the repair as it is alot. But obviously a bike has a different value to everyone

Mine is a lot to me as I commute every day to uni 70 mile trip and when I work its 100 mile trip

I kind of want advise on what I should do with the bike? It has 2 days MOT left , 2 months of tax and IMO body wise etc its ok obviously just lots of niggling mechinical issues but the engine is sweet. If i were to sell for spares and repairs would 2-300 be fair?

I have always wanted a CBR 600 since I passed my CBT at 16 , I am wondering if you guys , from pics alone, think this is a good example of the breed. I need a bike asap and I know ill have to pay a little bit more for that. I have a £1500 MAX limit and this is hitting it.

fucking 800 big ones, is everything gold plated ot something, i could get that sorted for around the £250 mark. thats 2 new tyres, a basic D.I.D chain and JT sprockets (maybe cheaper to to get JT chain too as it meant to be as good as D.I.D). second hand master should be around £20, maybe £30 and brand new handle bars can be had for around the £15 mark.

alot of it is going to be down to how much you are willing to spend and how much you can do yourself.

£800, you may not have gotten done on the MOT but you nearly got done on that bill, dear god.

as for the CBR, 52k on the clock, looks clean but that maybe the bullshit that come with alot of second hand bikes, you would have to go and see and hear it before you cold een start to make any judgment on it

I cant quite do the tyres myself.

maybe handles bars and chain and sprocket at a push but I should of added in previous post I am looking to "treat" myself when I finish uni in 4 weeks time to a newer bike.

Those are easy fixes, contrary to.belief it doesn't invalidate your current MOT... They make you think it does.

£800? Did they think it was April 1st?

If my bike failed on the above I wouldn't fret about it (well I would right now, as pay day is far away!), it's not a total disaster, just a few expensive consumables have happened at once, making it seem expensive. (Usually you get things fix when they break, so they don't build up and become a massive cash hit).

shocks - 140
handle bars - guesstamate on what youve said 25
chain and sprocket - 80
tyres if done at garage i guess 180 ish
master cylinder 25-30

so 450 ish on parts ( the same the garage quoted) then obviously their labour on top and they said they would charge hours max for the lot plus vat

i could see if my local tyre dealer has some part worn motorbike tyres? and the garage did mention they could go for a refurbed set of shocks if that helped

That CBR is a rip off. I got my '99 zx6r with 19,000 and in near mint condition for £1300. Don't buy. For £1500 you are looking at bikes a fair bit newer and with much less on the clock.

It was an ebay auction from a triumph dealer. They put their part ex's up for auction. To be fair, its now the silly season for prices but I still think you can get much better deals than that cbr.

Brand new aftermarket shocks on ebay for £50.
Some bars on ebay for £25 delivered.
£80 seems about right for a cheap chain and sprockets.
Consider part worn tyres if you're short on cash and considering selling soon anyway. Think Paddy does tyres - if so, may well get both for £60.
£30 on ebay for the master cylinder.

So £245 on parts. Doesn't seem too bad to me .
Probably worth it if you're going to sell anyway, as quite likely having a fresh MOT will bump it up that much anyway.
